Savate
Savate (), also known as French Boxing (French language, French: ''Boxe Française'') or French Foot Fighting, is a French hybrid martial art and full-contact combat sport that combines principles of boxing, western boxing with a wide variety of kicking techniques. Unlike kickboxing styles such as Muay Thai, which allow knee (strike), knee and/or tibia, shin strikes in competitive bouts, savate involves kicking exclusively with one's feet, but participants can nonetheless target any part of the body. The sport is also notable for requiring footwear to be worn by the competitors, as would be expected from individuals fighting in the streets. A male practitioner of savate is called a "tireur" while a female one is a "tireuse". Michel Casseux
Michel Casseux, also known as "Pisseux" (1794–1869) was a Savate instructor. He is widely considered one of the pioneers of the sport, and is even credited as its inventor. Life Based on streetfighting techniques he developed around 1820 "L'art de la savate". He banned certain street-fighting manners and developed a regulated system for self-defense and competition. Due to his efforts the new sport even became attractive to members of the French upper class who consequently attended his Savate gym. Casseux elaborated the first training system for Savate and his gym (or "salle") was the first official Savate academy ever. Charles Lecour
Charles Lecour (1808 – 1894) was a French boxer. He began his studies of Savate at an early age and was a student of Michel Casseux, who merged Savate and English boxing to a fighting style he eventually called French Boxing. Life While still in France Charles Lecour watched English boxing on a high level when he was a spectator of an official match Owen Swift vs. Jack Adams in 1838. It has been reported that Lecour would have sparred with Owen Swift although Charles Lecour as a savateur was not used to exchanging fist blows. Due to Savate's roots in street fighting, Savateurs even held their guard low. Federation Internationale De Savate
The International Savate Federation (''Federation Internationale de Savate'') is the world governing body for the sport of Savate. The organization is dedicated to the promotion of the sport of savate and canne de combat. It currently has 63 member countries. The organization holds biannual World and Continental championships, while their member countries hold national competitions. History During the 1880s and 1890s Joseph Charlemont and Lois Albert synthesized the various savate methods and moves and created the "academic style" of the sports, but were opposed to adjusting it to fit the modern demands of the sport. By 1944 there were two separate views of the sport of savate: the white collar practitioners who were in favor of full contact ring fighting, and the academically oriented practitioners who opposed this. Kickboxing ( ) is a full-contact hybrid Martial arts, martial art and Boxing (other), boxing type based on punch (combat), punching and kicking. Kickboxing originated in the 1950s to 1970s. Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact fighting combat sport, sport based on strike (attack), striking and grappling; incorporating techniques from various combat sports from around the world. A kick is a physical strike using the leg, in unison usually with an area of the knee or lower using the foot, heel, tibia (shin), ball of the foot, blade of the foot, toes or knee (the latter is also known as a knee strike). The 1924 Summer Olympics (), officially the Games of the VIII Olympiad () and officially branded as Paris 1924, were an international multi-sport event held in Paris, France. The opening ceremony was held on 5 July, but some competitions had already started on 4 May. A contact sport is any sport where physical contact between competitors, or their environment, is an integral part of the game. For example, gridiron football.
