Sarles–Crystal City Border Crossing
The Sarles–Crystal City Border Crossing connects the towns of Sarles, North Dakota and Crystal City, Manitoba on the Canada–United States border. North Dakota Highway 20 on the American side joins Manitoba Highway 34 on the Canadian side. Canadian side In 1897, E.M. Kerr was the inaugural customs officer, such duties having previously been performed by the North-West Mounted Police. In 1899, the status was upgraded to an outport of entry under the administrative oversight of the Port of Winnipeg. The current station was built in 1955. US side In 1961, the US built the Sarles border station in the median of the roadway. In 2012, this facility was replaced with a large modern border station. In 2014, the Sarles Port of Entry processed an average of 10 passenger cars and 3 trucks per day. North Dakota Highway 20
North Dakota Highway 20 (ND 20) is a north–south highway in North Dakota. It runs from U.S. Route 52 (US 52) and US 281 in Jamestown to the Canada–United States border near Sarles. The highway continues into Manitoba as PTH 34. A portion of ND 20 between mile markers 87 and 90 was closed in April 2010 due to flooding at Devils Lake and Spring Lake. Route description Starting at US 52 in downtown Jamestown, ND 20 follows 4th Street NE until 5th Avenue NE, then curves onto 13th Street NE until 12th Avenue NE where ND 20 follows 12th Avenue out of Jamestown. 21.3 miles away from the intersection, ND 20 turns right onto ND 9 and continues for about six miles before turning off in Courtenay and running for 16.8 miles until intersecting with ND 200 in Glenfield. Sarles is a city in Cavalier and Towner counties in the State of North Dakota. The population was 16 at the 2020 census. Sarles was founded in 1905 at the end of the Great Northern railway extension north of Munich, called the "Sarles Branch". The town is named for North Dakota Governor Elmore Y. Manitoba Highway 34
Provincial Trunk Highway 34 (PTH 34) is a provincial primary highway located in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It runs from the U.S. border (where it meets with ND 20) to PTH 16 (Yellowhead Highway) at the town of Gladstone. PTH 34 is two lanes and runs north-south in the south-central region of the province. It is the main highway for the towns of Crystal City, Pilot Mound, and Holland. While the village of Austin is actually located 1 km east of the highway along PTH 1, the highway itself provides access to Austin's Agricultural Museum, which hosts the annual Thresherman's Reunion and Stampede each July. Crystal City, Manitoba
Crystal City is an unincorporated community recognized as a local urban district in the Municipality of Louise within the Canadian province of Manitoba. It held village status prior to January 1, 2015. It is located on Highway 3, 16 kilometres north of the Canada–United States border and 200 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg. In summer 1878, Thomas Greenway, who would later serve in the Manitoba Legislature and become Premier of Manitoba, traveled to the region. During the following winter, he organized the Rock Lake Colonization Co. In summer 1879, the party of eight men arrived at Crystal Creek. By 1882, Crystal City was a substantial town. The earliest newspaper reference is for the land development that year. The community was moved near the railway, which is no longer in use, for more attraction. The international border between Canada and the United States is the longest in the world by total length. The boundary (including boundaries in the Great Lakes, Atlantic, and Pacific coasts) is long. North-West Mounted Police
The North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) was a Canadian paramilitary police force, established in 1873, to maintain order in the new Canadian North-West Territories (NWT) following the 1870 transfer of Rupert's Land and North-Western Territory to Canada from the Hudson's Bay Company, the Red River Rebellion and in response to lawlessness, demonstrated by the subsequent Cypress Hills Massacre and fears of United States military intervention. The NWMP combined military, police and judicial functions along similar lines to the Royal Irish Constabulary. A small, mobile police force was chosen to reduce potential for tensions with the United States and First Nations in Canada, First Nations.
