Sandoy
Sandoy ("Sand Island") is the first of the five southern islands that make up the Faroe chain, the fifth biggest of all the Faroe Islands, an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark. It also refers to the Regions of the Faroe Islands, region that includes this island along with Skúvoy and Stóra Dímun. , the largest population centre on the island is the village of Sandur (Faroe Islands), Sandur with a population of 532. Sandoyartunnilin
Sandoyartunnilin () is an undersea tunnel, road tunnel in the Faroe Islands. It connects the main island of Streymoy with Sandoy to the south. The length of the tunnel is , and the estimated cost is 860 million Danish krone, DKK. The tunnel opened for traffic on 21 December 2023, after which the ferry ''Strandfaraskip Landsins, Teistin'' ceased its route between Gamlarætt on Streymoy and Skopun on Sandoy. The tunnel crosses the Skopunarfjørður and runs from Gamlarætt to Traðardalur in central Sandoy, near the Inni í Dal stadium. The two sides of the tunnel were connected during a ceremony on 3 February 2022. Construction began on 27 June 2019, and the halfway mark was hit in September 2020. Gamlarætt
Gamlarætt is a ferry port in the Faroe Islands. It is situated on the southwestern side of the island of Streymoy, the largest island in the Faroes, between the villages of Velbastaður and Kirkjubøur. It accommodates ferry services to the islands of Sandoy and Hestur. The port is also used for local salmon farms. History Until 1993 all ferry traffic to Sandoy operated from Tórshavn, on a northern route across Skopunarfjørður to Skopun and Hestur, and a southern route via Fjords in the Faroe Islands, Skúvoyarfjørður to Skálavík, Skúvoy and Sandur, Faroe Islands, Sandur. This resulted in crossing times of 1–2 hours for non-stop trips to 2–3 hours with other calls en route from Tórshavn. Skálavík
Skálavík () is a village and municipality on the eastern coast of the Faroese island Sandoy. Name The name Skálavík comes from Faroese language common noun skál (bowl)+ vík (bay), meaning a bowl-shaped bay. History The village's stone church was built in 1891. The famous Faroese writers Heðin Brú (born Hans Jacob Jacobsen) (1901–1987) and Kristian Osvald Viderø (1906–1988) were both born in Skálavík. In late January 2008 Skálavík was hit by a strong hurricane. The port was destroyed, along with many boats and houses. The damage was so great that emergency aid was provided from Iceland. Skopun
Skopun (pronounced ; ) is a town in the Faroe Islands situated on the northern coast of Sandoy. Skopun is the second-largest town on the island. Skopun Municipality consists only of the town of Skopun. History Although the area has been inhabited since the Middle Ages, Skopun was not founded until 1833. The people of Skopun did not possess any land. They subsisted on fishing, so the houses were built close to the water. In 1897, Skopun's church was constructed out of timber taken from the old church of Vestmanna. The Faroe Islands' first road was built on Sandoy in 1917, as part of a government-financed plan to improve the island's non-existent harbour facilities. It connects Skopun with Sandur, the island's main town. Skopun's harbour was built in 1926 and later extended. In 1982, the harbour was furnished with a gate which protects the dock from the sea. Dalur
Dalur () is a village in the Faroe Islands. Dalur is located on the east-side of Sandoy. The village lies in the bottom of a relatively large valley. ''Dalur'' means ''valley'' in Faroese. A little road leads from Dalur to the south-tip of the island. From there it is possible to walk to the bird cliffs ''Skorin''. Streymoy (, ) is the largest and most populated island of the Faroe Islands. The capital, Tórshavn, is located on its southeast coast. The name means "island of currents". It also refers to the largest region of the country that also includes the islands of Hestur, Koltur and Nólsoy. Geography The island is oblong in shape and stretches roughly in northwest–southeast direction with a length of and a width of around .
