Sand Martin Bridge
The Sand Martin Bridge (Chinese: 沙燕橋) is one of Hong Kong's bridges, part of the Sha Tin Rural Committee Road, named after the Shatin Martins, the first baseball team from Hong Kong to win a league. The Sand Martin bridge crosses the Shing Mun River, connecting Sha Tin Town Centre with Sha Tin Wai. Construction The Sand Martin Bridge connects to the Yuen Wo Road to the West and the Tai Chung Kiu Road to the East, connecting Sha Tin Town Centre and Lek Yuen to Sha Tin Wai. The bridge has a 4-lane dual carriageway with pedestrian walkways and cycling tracks, bounded by aluminum vehicular parapets and pedestrian fences. Shing Mun River
The Shing Mun River or Shing Mun River Channel is a river in Sha Tin, Hong Kong. History The original Shing Mun River began at Needle Hill, and flowed into the former Tide Cove (Sha Tin Hoi), a shallow bay. In the 1970s, Tide Cove was reclaimed and turned to Sha Tin New Town. The river was extended through a 7 km long, 200 m wide artificial channel in the middle of the area to flow into Tolo Harbour. Other rivers that had originally flowed into Tide Cove are now tributaries of Shing Mun River in the form of concreted nullahs. The Shing Mun River channel runs from the Tai Wai area, through the Sha Tin town centre to the Tolo Harbour. It has three main tributaries, namely Tai Wai Nullah, Fo Tan Nullah and Siu Lek Yuen Nullah. Sha Tin
Sha Tin, also spelt Shatin, is a neighbourhood along Shing Mun River in the eastern New Territories, Hong Kong. Administratively, it is part of the Sha Tin District. Sha Tin is one of the neighbourhoods of the Sha Tin New Town project. The new town was founded in 1973 under the New Towns Development Programme of the Hong Kong government. Its current name was named after the nearby village of Sha Tin Wai. The literal English translation is 'Sand Fields'. History Tai Wai Village, located in Tai Wai, next to Sha Tin, and the oldest and largest walled village in Sha Tin District, was built in 1574, during the Ming Dynasty. The New Territories is one of the three main regions of Hong Kong, alongside Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula. Sha Tin Wai () is an area in Sha Tin District, New Territories, Hong Kong, named after Sha Tin Wai Village (). Name The name of the Sha Tin area allegedly comes from the fact that British colonial officials mistook the name of Sha Tin Wai village as the name of the area.
