Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël
Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël (; unofficially Ste-Marie-St-Raphaël) is a former village in Gloucester County, New Brunswick, Canada. It held village status prior to 2023 and is now part of the town of Île-de-Lamèque. Located on Lamèque Island, the village was formed by the incorporation of most of the local service district (LSD) of St. Raphael sur-Mer and a small part of the neighbouring LSD of Haut-Lamèque. Contrary to frequent citation, it was not formed by an amalgamation involving a village named Sainte-Marie. History In May 1971, an anxious Acadian fishing population demanded a public hearing into the safety of the '' Marc Guylaine'', and 400 people met at the Saint-Raphaël community centre where an "action group" was commissioned to study the issue. Ultimately the last of the "cursed" sister ships was found to be unseaworthy. Shippagan Parish, New Brunswick
Shippegan (incorrectly ''Shippagan'' from the French colloquial spelling) is a geographic parish in Gloucester County, New Brunswick, Canada. Located in the northeastern corner of the province at the end of the Acadian Peninsula, the parish consists of the three main islands of Taylor, Lamèque, and Miscou, along with several smaller islands and tidal wetlands; Taylor Island is now joined to the mainland by an isthmus, which is crossed by a causeway. Extensive wetlands lead to a peat moss industry; more recently Spanish multinational Acciona has built a wind farm operation on Lamèque Island. Kiteboarding has been a successful tourist attraction. Lamèque
Lamèque () is a former town in Gloucester County, New Brunswick, Canada. It held town status prior to 2023 and is now part of the town of Île-de-Lamèque. Of Amerindian rather than French origin, "Lamèque" comes from the Micmac Elmugwadasik, a descriptive reference to the fact that "the head of the tidal river is turned to one side". The name of the island approved by the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names in 1974, the result of a local petition replaced the earlier Shippegan. History A Francophone community, it is situated on Lamèque Island, off the northeastern tip of the Acadian Peninsula. Lamèque has hosted an annual baroque music festival every summer since 1975. The 2011 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population on May 10, 2011. Statistics Canada, an agency of the Canadian government, conducts a nationwide census every five years.
