The Network of Microfinance Institutions (), or RIM is a non-profit association of microfinance institutions in Burundi. Origins The six founding members of the Network of Microfinance Institutions were the National Bank for Economic Development (BNDE), the Financial Company for Development (COFIDE), the Cooperative Fund for Savings and Mutual Credit (Coopératives d'Épargne et de Crédit (Burundi), CECM), the Municipal Development Fund (, FDC), Twitezimbere ASBL and the Cooperative for Solidarity with Peasants for Savings and Credit (COSPEC). They wanted a framework to discuss their policies and strategies, to professionalize the sector and to establish a sustainable partnership system. The RIM was approved by ministerial order no. 531/119 of 22 February 2002. As of 2024, it had 37 member institutions, accounting for 99% of microfinance volume in Burundi, as well as the BNDE financial institution. Bujumbura
Bujumbura (; ), formerly Usumbura, is the economic capital, largest city and main port of Burundi. It ships most of the country's chief export, coffee, as well as cotton and tin ore. Bujumbura was formerly the country's political capital. In late December 2018, Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would follow through on a 2007 promise to return Gitega its former political capital status, with Bujumbura remaining as economical capital and center of commerce. A vote in the Parliament of Burundi made the change official on 16 January 2019, with all branches of government expected to move to Gitega within three years.
