The Network of Microfinance Institutions (), or RIM is a non-profit association of microfinance institutions in Burundi. Origins The six founding members of the Network of Microfinance Institutions were the National Bank for Economic Development (BNDE), the Financial Company for Development (COFIDE), the Cooperative Fund for Savings and Mutual Credit (Coopératives d'Épargne et de Crédit (Burundi), CECM), the Municipal Development Fund (, FDC), Twitezimbere ASBL and the Cooperative for Solidarity with Peasants for Savings and Credit (COSPEC). They wanted a framework to discuss their policies and strategies, to professionalize the sector and to establish a sustainable partnership system. The RIM was approved by ministerial order no. 531/119 of 22 February 2002. As of 2024, it had 37 member institutions, accounting for 99% of microfinance volume in Burundi, as well as the BNDE financial institution. Bujumbura (; ), formerly Usumbura, is the economic capital, largest city and main port of Burundi. It ships most of the country's chief export, coffee, as well as cotton and tin ore. COFIDE
The Development Finance Company (, COFIDE) is a microcredit bank in Burundi. Foundation COFIDE was founded on 14 May 2000, the first bank in Burundi to establish its head office in a rural area, as a financial institution for the poorest people. It financed coffee producers, the newly founded University of Ngozi, students, housing and small businesses. COFIDE provided microcredit, relatively small amounts of assistance where the operational costs and/or risk of non-recovery were relatively high. On 17 July 2000 it was reported that Pascal-Firmin Ndimira, a former prime minister of Burundi, was going to take charge of COFIDE. Coopératives D'Épargne Et De Crédit (Burundi)
''Coopératives d'Épargne et de Crédit'' (Savings and Credit Cooperatives), or COOPECs, are microfinance savings and loans cooperatives serving low income people in Burundi. FENACOBU is the umbrella organization for the cooperatives. Background There were systems to mobilize peasant savings in Burundi before 1980, but they were ineffective. In 1981 the Burundian Ministry of Communal Development approached the ''Centre International du Crédit Mutuel'' (CICM) of France to request assistance in establishing and developing a Mutual Credit system in Burundi. The CICM began work in Burundi in 1981 and 1982 to enable the formation of rural savings and loans cooperatives (COOPECs). Twitezimbere ASBL is a non-profit association serving low income peasant farmers in Burundi. It assists them in adopting good farming and business practices, obtaining micro-credit, finding markets and so on. Challenges include illiteracy, traditional biases about women's roles, potential environmental damage from development projects and rapid population growth. Twitezimbere Microfinance, originating from and associated with Twitezimbere ASDL, is now a public limited microfinance company under the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock.
