Royal Golf Club Mariánské Lázně, also known as Royal Marienbad Golf Club, is a golf club in the spa town of Mariánské Lázně () in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic. History The club, one of the oldest in Central Europe, was at the time of its founding located in the empire of Austria-Hungary. Marienbad, as it was then known, enjoyed a golden era as one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, where many celebrities and European rulers came to enjoy the curative carbon dioxide springs. The original 9-hole golf course and clubhouse were opened in 1905, in response to numerous requests from western spa guests. The course was built according to plans by Robert Doig of Musselburgh, Scotland, and sits at an elevation of 787 meters above sea level. King Edward VII, who financially supported the club, together with the British ambassador to Vienna, became two of club's first members. Sir Thomas Henry Cotton, Order of the British Empire, MBE (28 January 1907 – 22 December 1987) was an English professional golfer. He won the The Open Championship, Open Championship in 1934, 1937 and 1948, becoming the leading British player of his generation. Early life Cotton was born in Holmes Chapel, then known as Church Hulme, near Congleton, Cheshire on 28 January 1907. He had an older brother, Leslie (born 1905), who also became a professional golfer. Cotton was brought up in Crystal Palace Road, East Dulwich, London. He later went to Reigate Grammar School, and then won a scholarship to Alleyn's School in Dulwich, South London. Mark William Seymour (1897 – 16 September 1952) was an English professional golfer. His birth was registered as William Mark Seymour. He was a half-brother of Abe Mitchell. Although not as successful as his half-brother, he enjoyed considerable success during his time in Scotland and twice played for England against Scotland. In important tournaments he was a runner-up in the 1931 Irish Open and a losing finalist in the 1931 and 1933 News of the World Match Play.
