Rockdale, New South Wales
Rockdale is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Rockdale is located 13 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George, New South Wales, St George area. Rockdale is one of the administrative centres for the Local government in Australia, local government area of the Bayside Council. Since 1985 Rockdale has been a twinned city with Bitola, in the Republic of Macedonia. History Rockdale was known by Europeans as Frog Hollow, then White Gum Flat and later as West Botany. The name ''Rockdale'' was suggested in 1878 by the first postmistress, Mary Ann Geeves. Kyeemagh Market Gardens
The Kyeemagh Market Gardens are heritage-listed market gardens at Occupation Road, Kyeemagh, Bayside Council, New South Wales, Australia. It was established from 1892. It is also known as Occupation Road Market Gardens, Chinese Market Gardens and Rockdale Market Gardens. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The area east of Tabrett Street is believed to have been occupied by market gardeners since 1892-3, whilst other areas were still vacant. In later years, these areas were occupied by Italian and Maltese gardeners. The site has been leased by Chinese Market gardeners since its resumption for open space 1980s. Lydham Hall
Lydham Hall is a state heritage-listed former rural residence at 18 Lydham Avenue, Rockdale in New South Wales, Australia. The house is currently used as a local museum holding a collection of furniture and objects dated from the 1860s. Run by the St George Historical Society, it is opened to the public on the first Sunday of every month. The parcel of land where the house now stands was originally part of the 1200 acres named Bexley granted to James Chandler. Joseph Davis purchased the site in November 1859. The property was initially named ''Lidham Hill'', but the house within the current land parcel later became known as Lydham Hall. The building was completed in 1878-1879. It stands on the highest point of land between the Cooks River and the Georges River. The City of Rockdale was a local government area in southern and St George regions of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The city centre was located south-west of the Sydney central business district, on the western shores of Botany Bay. First proclaimed on 13 January 1871, Rockdale was formerly known as the Municipality of West Botany until 1887 and the Municipality of Rockdale before being proclaimed as a City in 1995. Frederick Jamison Gibbes
Frederick Jamison Gibbes (31 October 183917 January 1888) was an Australian politician. He was born at Regentville near Penrith to William Gibbes and Harriet Eliza Jamison. His middle name was sometimes spelt Jamieson. He attended a variety of schools before studying at the University of Sydney, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1860. He then worked for the lands office until 1865, when he began studying for the bar. He was never successful in this, and instead entered business. On 18 April 1883, he married Mary Jane Gill, with whom he had two children. A Newtown alderman from 1882 to 1886, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Newtown in 1882. When political parties emerged at the 1887 election, he joined the Free Trade Party and held the seat until his death the following year. He did not hold ministerial or parliamentary office.
