River Ranch is a rural locality in the Gladstone Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , River Ranch had a population of 269 people. Geography The '' Calliope River'' forms part of the western boundary before flowing through to form part of the eastern boundary. Calliope Crossing is a ford over the river (). The Bruce Highway passes through the north of the locality. History In 1930, a bridge was built at the Calliope Crossing over the Calliope River to replace the dangerous stone causeway which was under the water and was slimy and dangerous. When the weather was bad, the causeway could not be used, necessitating a deviation to avoid it. The bridge carried the Bruce Highway until it was rerouted further north and crosses the river at Burua. The centenary celebrations of the Shire of Calliope in 1979 created a collection of historic material, which led to the establishment of the Port Curtis Historical Society. The Shire of Calliope was a local government area in the Capricornia region of Queensland, Australia. It was centred on the town of Calliope. History Calliope Division was created on 11 November 1879 as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 1044. On 7 January 1902 part of Calliope Division was separated to create Miriam Vale Division. With the passage of the ''Local Authorities Act 1902'', Calliope Division became the Shire of Calliope on 31 March 1903. In 1927, the council hall was in Gladstone. Bruce Highway
The Bruce Highway is a major highway in Queensland, Australia. Commencing in the state capital, Brisbane, it passes through areas close to the eastern coast on its way to Cairns in Far North Queensland. The route is part of the Australian National Highway (Australia), National Highway and also part of Highway 1 (Australia), Highway 1, the longest highway route in Australia. Calliope River
The Calliope River is a river in Central Queensland, Australia. The river rises in the Calliope Range inland from the industrial port city of Gladstone, flows past the town of Calliope, before emptying into the Pacific Ocean just north of Gladstone. River length is , with a catchment area of . Oaky, Paddock and Larcom Creeks are the main tributaries of the river. The major industry in the river area is the raising of beef cattle. Like most sub tropical and tropical estuaries, the waters of the river may contain box jellyfish for many kilometres upstream. This venomous, marine animal poses a threat to swimmers. Calliope is a rural town and locality in the Gladstone Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Calliope had a population of 5,263 people. Geography Calliope is near the 'cross-roads' of the Bruce Highway and the Dawson Highway in Central Queensland, SSW of the port city of Gladstone. Gladstone–Monto Road (State Route 69) runs south from the Dawson Highway through the locality. History The town takes its name from the Calliope River, which in turn was named after HMS ''Calliope'' by the Governor of New South Wales, Charles Augustus FitzRoy, on 18 April 1854, after travelling from Sydney to Port Curtis on board that ship.
