Rikard Kaarbø
Rikard Olai Kaarbø (22 May 1850 – 3 March 1901) was a Norwegian businessperson and politician. Personal life Rikard Olai Wilhelmsen Kaarbø was born in the parish of Trondenes in Troms, Norway to Wilhelm Olssøn Kaarbø (1811–1876) and Martine Mikaline Kildal (1828–1903). In 1875, he married Anna Elisabeth Lund. They were the parents of thirteen children. Among their children were the painter Ragnhild Kaarbø. Another daughter, Valdis Kaarbø, married Erland Frisvold who served as mayor of Harstad. Their son was General Paal Frisvold, who was head of the Norwegian Army. Career He is associated with the establishment of the town of Harstad on the island of Hinnøya. He founded several businesses and fostered development of the local shipping industry. Trondenes
Trondenes is a neighborhood and parish in the town of Harstad in Harstad Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The area is located on the northern end of the town, on a peninsula in the VĂĄgsfjorden. The village is notable for the Trondenes Fort at the northern tip of the peninsula as well as the medieval Trondenes Church. History The medieval Trondenes Church was historically the centre of the large Trondenes prosti, a deanery in the Diocese of HĂĄlogaland. According to tradition, the first Christians in Northern Norway were baptised, perhaps as early as the year 999, in the small pond, Laugen, just west of Trondenes Church. Ragnhild Kaarbø
Ragnhild Kaarbø (26 December 1889 – 20 August 1949) was a Norwegian painter. Influenced by Fauvism, she painted expressionistic portraits. She was also influenced by Cubism, but as her cubistic paintings were criticized by the press, she eventually focused on impressionistic landscape paintings. Personal life Born on 26 December 1889 in Harstad Municipality, Harstad in Troms, Kaarbø was one of thirteen children born to Rikard Kaarbø and Anna Elisabeth Lund. Paal Frisvold (born 1908)
Paal Frisvold (22 January 1908 – 16 March 1997) was a Norwegian general, who was head of the Norwegian Army from 1961 to 1966. Personal life Frisvold was born in Harstad, the son of Erland Frisvold (1877–1971) and Valdis Kaarbø Frisvold (1882–1961). In 1936 he married Kirsten Semb. Career Frisvold finished his ''examen artium'' in 1928, graduated as a military officer in 1932, and from the Norwegian Military College in 1934. He was made a lieutenant in the infantry from 1932, and served as a trainee with the General Staff from 1935 to 1938. From 1938 to 1940 he was secretary at the Ministry of Defence. Frisvold was among the group of central persons who developed military resistance in Norway in 1940 and 1941, eventually leading to the formation of Milorg. In March 1941 he had to flee to Sweden. Harstad (; ) is the second-most populated municipality in Troms county, Norway. It is mostly located on the large island of Hinnøya. Erland Frisvold
Erland Frisvold (May 13, 1877 – August 22, 1971) was a Norwegian colonel, civil engineer, and mayor of Harstad. Frisvold was born at the farm Kjæstad in Lom, Norway, the eldest child of PĂĄl Erlandsson Frisvold (1846–1912) and Anne Rolvsdotter Blakar Frisvold (1850–1937).Steenstrup, Bjørn. 1968. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1899, and from the Norwegian Military College in 1902, and then served as the civil engineer for Harstad from 1908 to 1911. Hinnøya
Hinnøya ( Norwegian; ) is the fourth-largest island in Norway, and the largest outside the Svalbard archipelago. The lies just off the western coast of Northern Norway. Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old. Trondenes Municipality
Trondenes is a former municipality in Troms county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1964. It was located along the western shore of the Vågsfjorden in what is now Harstad Municipality. Trondenes included the southern part of the island of Grytøya and part of the eastern coast of the island of Hinnøya as well as some smaller islands. Located just north of the town of Harstad, the village of Trondenes was the administrative centre of the municipality. That village is also the site of the historic Trondenes Church, the northernmost medieval stone church in Norway and the seat of the historic Trondenes parish.
