Rathausplatz (St. Pölten)
The Rathausplatz is a square in Vienna's first district, the Innere Stadt, in front of the Rathaus. It is surrounded by the Rathauspark and the Ringstrasse. History The area now known as Rathausplatz was originally part of the Josefstädter Glacis, an open grassland in front of Vienna’s city walls, maintained as a defensive field. In the 19th century, it served as a parade and drill ground for the imperial army. Following the commencement of the construction of the RIngstraße in 1858, the site remained under military control for several years. However, after prolonged negotiations led by Mayor Cajetan Felder, the army relinquished its claim, allowing the City Expansion Fund to develop an urban plan for the area. Battle Of Vienna
The Battle of Vienna took place at Kahlenberg Mountain near Vienna on 1683 after the city had been besieged by the Ottoman Empire for two months. The battle was fought by the Holy Roman Empire (led by the Habsburg monarchy) and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, both under the command of King John III Sobieski, against the Ottomans and their vassal and tributary states. The battle marked the first time the Commonwealth and the Holy Roman Empire had cooperated militarily against the Ottomans. The defeat was a turning point for Ottoman expansion into Europe, after which they would gain no further ground. Count Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg (12 January 1638 – 4 January 1701) was military governor of Vienna from 1680, the city's defender during the Battle of Vienna in 1683, Holy Roman Empire, Imperial general during the Great Turkish War, and President of the Hofkriegsrat. By birth, he was a member of the Starhemberg, House of Starhemberg. Babenberg
The House of Babenberg was a noble dynasty of Austrian Dukes and Margraves. Descending from the Popponids and originally from Bamberg in the Duchy of Franconia (present-day Bavaria), the Babenbergs ruled the imperial Margraviate of Austria from its creation in 976 AD until its elevation to a duchy in 1156, and from then until the extinction of the line in 1246, whereafter they were succeeded by the House of Habsburg. Christmas Tree
A Christmas tree is a decorated tree, usually an evergreen pinophyta, conifer, such as a spruce, pine or fir, associated with the celebration of Christmas. Life Ball
The Life Ball in Vienna is the biggest charity event in Europe supporting people with HIV or AIDS. The event is organized by the nonprofit organization AIDS LIFE, which was founded in 1992 by Gery Keszler and Torgom Petrosian. A Christmas market is a street market associated with the celebration of Christmas during the four weeks of Advent. These markets originated in Germany, but are now held in many countries.
