Qarabağ Futbol Klubu () is an Azerbaijani professional football club that competes in the Azerbaijan Premier League, the top flight of Azerbaijani football. The club originates from Aghdam in the Karabakh ( Azerbaijani: ''Qarabağ'') region, but has not played in its hometown since 1993 due to the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. The club now plays in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. Qarabağ plays its matches at the Azersun Arena and Tofiq Bahramov Stadium in Baku, which also serves as the venue for Azerbaijan national team matches. Formed in 1987, Qarabağ were founding members of the Azerbaijan Premier League in 1992. One season later, they won their first league championship, becoming the first non-Baku-based club to win the Premier League title. Neftçi Peşəkar Futbol Klubu, known simply as Neftçi () or Neftchi Baku, is an Azerbaijani professional association football, football club based in the capital Baku, that plays in the Azerbaijan Premier League, the highest tier of Football in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan football. The club was founded on 18 March 1937 and played under the name of Neftyanik until 1968. Since then, the club has been competing under the name of Neftçi. Neftçi played for a total of 27 seasons in the Soviet Top League, Top Division of Soviet football. 1993 Azerbaijan Top League
The 1993 Azerbaijan Top League was the second season of the Azerbaijan Top League and was contested by 20 clubs with 2 points awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and no points were awarded for a defeat. Neftchi Baku were unable to defend their championship, with Karabakh Agdam becoming the champions. The 20 participating teams where divided into two groups of 10, and faced each other twice. The top two clubs at the end of the 18 games qualified for the championship play-off matches, whilst the bottom three clubs were relegated. However Nefteqaz were spared relegation after Daşqın Zaqatala were relegated due to their financial problems. Allahverdi Teymur oghlu Baghirov (; April 22, 1946 – June 14, 1992) was an Azerbaijani officer, former leader of the Azerbaijani Popular Front Party of Agdam, head coach of Qarabağ FK and National Hero of Azerbaijan. Early years Seven daughters were born before his birth in his family, and his parents gave a name to him "Allahverdi" (meaning "God given"). Allahverdi Baghirov was born in Aghdam and finished Aghdam school city number one in 1965. After graduating from school, he started working at Qarabagh FK as a head coach. Battle Of Aghdam
The Battle of Aghdam (June – July 1993) took place on 23 July 1993 during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, during which Armenian forces captured the Azerbaijani city of Aghdam. The city of Aghdam, which had about 50,000 inhabitants prior to its capture, is located about 30 km northeast of Stepanakert and 5 km east of the border of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. Armenian forces considered Aghdam as a main staging area of Azerbaijani forces for attacks and artillery strikes against the Armenian-populated Nagorno-Karabakh region. A significant part of the surrounding Aghdam District was captured by Armenian forces as well. 1989 Soviet Second League was a Soviet competition in the Soviet Second League (III tier). It was conducted in two stages and included 195 teams. At first stage all participants were divided in 9 groups by geographical principle across the whole Soviet Union. The winners of groups would qualify to the second and final stage where they were split in three groups of three. Winners of each group in the final stage received promotion to the 1990 Soviet First League. Imarat Stadium
Imarat Stadium (), opened in 1952, was a multi-purpose stadium in Aghdam, Azerbaijan. The stadium was built in 1952 and used as home stadium by Qarabağ FK. The stadium was destroyed by bombardments from Armenian military forces during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War in June 1993. The stadium returned to Azerbaijani control on 20 November 2020 as a result of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. Following its capture, Azerbaijani forces began to clear mines from the stadium grounds. The Ministry of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan has declared that the stadium will be restored. On September 19, 2024, the foundation of the new "Imarat" stadium was laid by President Ilham Aliyev, and the construction of the stadium is expected to be completed in 2026.
