Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez
Puerto Ibáñez is a small town in the Aisén Region in the south of Chile. It is located on a bay off the north shore of General Carrera Lake, south of Coihaique. In the 2002 census it had a population of 757. It is the capital of the commune of Río Ibáñez, Chile, Río Ibáñez. History The town was founded in 1924. It was named after a Chilean miner, Cornelio Ibáñez, who spent several seasons in the area. Economy The town's economy is mainly based on cattle farming and crop growing, aided by a benign microclimate influenced by the lake. Distinctive pottery is also made in the town. Tourism is also important. There is rock art in the area, and the waterfall of the Ibanez River, Rio Ibáñez is away. Transportation The town is linked to the Carretera Austral by a paved road. General Carrera Lake
General Carrera Lake (Chilean part, officially renamed in 1959) or Lake Buenos Aires (Argentine part) is a deep lake located in Patagonia and shared by Argentina and Chile. Both names are internationally accepted, while the autochthonous name of the lake is Chelenko, which means "stormy waters" in Aonikenk. Another historical name is Coluguape from Mapuche, a derivative of this name is applied to Colhué Huapí Lake after Argentine explorer Francisco Moreno reached this lake in 1876 conflating it with Coluguape (General Carrera Lake). The lake is of glacial origin and is surrounded by the Andes mountain range. The lake drains to the Pacific Ocean on the west through the Baker River. Coihaique
Coyhaique (), also spelled Coihaique in Patagonia, is the capital city of both the Coyhaique Province and the Aysén Region of Chile. Founded by settlers in 1929, it is a young city. Until the twentieth century, Chile showed little interest in exploiting the remote Aisén region. The Carretera Austral southern highway opened in the 1980s. Río Ibáñez is a commune in General Carrera Province, Aisén Region, Chile. It is named after Ibáñez River, a major tributary of General Carrera Lake. Carretera Austral
The Carretera Austral (CH-7, ''in English: Southern Way'') is the name given to Chile's Route 7. The highway runs south for about from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins, passing through rural Patagonia. Carretera Austral provides road access to Chile's Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region, Aysén Region and southern parts of Los Lagos Region.
