Proletarian Left (Italy)
The Proletarian Unity Party (Italian language, Italian: ''Partito di Unità Proletaria'', PdUP) was a far-left political party in Politics of Italy, Italy. Origins The PdUP was founded in November 1972 by the minority factions of two parties: the New PSIUP, led by Vittorio Foa and Silvano Miniati, which gathered those militants from the Italian Socialist Party of Proletarian Unity (PSIUP) who had not agreed on the decision to join the Italian Communist Party (PCI); and Socialist Alternative (Italy), Socialist Alternative, led by Giovanni Russo Spena and philosopher Domenico Jervolino, which was composed of several renegades from the left wing of the Workers' Political Movement (MPL) who had opposed that party's earlier merger with the Italian Socialist Party (PSI). The new party's symbol was the hammer and sickle over the world, which it had inherited from the PSIUP. Proletarian Democracy
Proletarian Democracy (, DP) was a far-left political party in Italy. History 1970s DP was founded in 1975 as a joint electoral front of the Proletarian Unity Party (PdUP), Workers Vanguard (AO) and the "Workers Movement for Socialism" (MLS), for the 1975 Italian regional elections. At the local level, smaller groups joined, such as the "Marxist-Leninist Communist Organization", "Revolutionary Communist Groups - IV International" and the "League of the Communists". DP took part in the 1976 elections, winning 556,022 votes (1.51%) and 6 seats in the election to the Chamber of Deputies. On 13 April 1978, DP was transformed into a political party. Christian Democracy (DC) won roughly the same number of votes as it had four years ago. The Italian Communist Party performed well, winning seven percent more votes than the previous election, while minor parties lost votes to the Christian Democrats due to fears of communism. The historic Italian Liberal Party was nearly annihilated. Two new parties made their debut in this election: the liberal Radical Party, which had led a successful referendum on divorce, and the far-left Trotskyist Proletarian Democracy. Luigi Pintor (politician)
Luigi Pintor (18 September 1925 – 17 May 2003) was an Italian politician and journalist. Early life, education, and World War II After spending his childhood in Cagliari and acquiring the gymnasium license, at the outbreak of World War II Pintor left Sardinia to reach Rome with his mother and two sisters, where, shortly after, he learned of his father's death. He joined the Italian resistance movement in 1943 as a member of the Patriotic Action Groups, after learning that his brother Giaime was killed after stepped on a mine. On 14 May 1944, Pintor was arrested by the fascists, tortured and imprisoned at Regina Coeli, waiting for a death sentence; luckily, Pintor was freed one month later during the Liberation of Rome. Lucio Magri
Lucio Magri (19 August 1932 – 28 November 2011) was an Italian journalist and politician. Biography Magri was born in Ferrara in Emilia-Romagna, one of the most left-wing regions of Italy, but grew up in the strongly Catholic Bergamo, Lombardy. His first involvement in politics was as a member of the Christian Democrats, taking up positions firmly on the left wing of the party. However, in 1958 he was one of a number of Catholic intellectuals who joined the Italian Communist Party (PCI). In 1969, he was one of the founders of the far-left newspaper ''il manifesto'', co-editing it with Rossana Rossanda. The newspaper's work was controversial with the Communist Party's leadership, and by the end of that year Magri had been expelled from the party. Rossana Rossanda
Rossana Rossanda (23 April 1924 – 20 September 2020) was an Italian communist politician, journalist, and feminist. Biography Rossanda was born in Pula, then part of Kingdom of Italy. She studied in Milan and was a student of philosopher Antonio Banfi. At a very young age, she took part in the Italian resistance. Following the end of World War II, she joined the Italian Communist Party (PCI). After a short period, the party secretary Palmiro Togliatti named her responsible for culture in the party. She was elected for the first time to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 1963. In 1968, Rossanda published a small essay entitled ''L'anno degli studenti'' ("The Year of the Students"), in which she declared her support for the youth movement. Rossanda was part of a minority inside the PCI that was against the Soviet Union, and together with Luigi Pintor, Valentino Parlato, and Lucio Magri founded the party and newspaper ''il manifesto''. Mario Capanna
Mario Capanna (born 10 January 1945) is an Italian politician and writer. Biography Born in Città di Castello, he studied Philosophy at the Catholic University of Milan, and was the leader of the Italian students' movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1969 he was attacked by exponents of the neo-Fascist Italian Social Movement. In 1975 he entered politics, adhering to the Proletarian Unity Party (PdUP), which later merged with Proletarian Democracy (DP). Capanna was charismatic leader of the latter until 27 June 1987, when he resigned, succeeded by Giovanni Russo Spena. Capanna was elected for the DP to the Italian Chamber of Deputies (1983–1987), and to the European Parliament (1979).
