Polytechnic (Greece)
The Polytechnic ( Greek: Πολυτεχνείο) is the traditional name for institutions of higher education in Greece, dealing with engineering at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. There are currently two polytechnics that operate as independent (public) universities and five polytechnic schools that belong to universities. They consist mainly of Engineering departments and their undergraduate programs have a duration of 5 years (full-time). The legal framework of their operation is the same as that of the universities, and their graduates have equal rights with the graduates of public Greek universities. Education in Greece is centralized and governed by the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports (Greek: ) at all grade levels throughout elementary, middle school, and high school. The Ministry exercises control over public schools, formulates and implements legislation, administers the budget, coordinates national level university entrance examinations, sets up the national curriculum, appoints public school teaching staff, and coordinates other services. The Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs is also in charge of which classes are necessary for general education. They have implemented mandatory courses such as religion in required grade levels (1st-9th grades). Students can only be exempt if their guardians fill out a declaration excluding them from religious lessons. Apolytirion
Apolytirio ( in Dimotiki from 1976–present; known as Apolytirion, , in Katharevousa from 1837–1976; abbreviated Apol., ) is the official senior secondary education school completion certificate (graduation qualification) in Greece (and Cyprus) obtained after successfully completing the third grade of lyceum (high school). It is graded on a 20-point scale. Specific conditions and rules apply to each type of lyceum in the Pan-Hellenic Examinations, based on subjects that are the same as or related to those of the General Lyceum. A polytechnic was a tertiary education teaching institution in England, Wales () and Northern Ireland offering higher diplomas, undergraduate degree and postgraduate education (masters and PhD) that was governed and administered at the national level by the Council for National Academic Awards. At the outset, the focus of polytechnics was on STEM subjects, with a special emphasis on engineering.
