Pike County, Arkansas
Pike County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,171. The county seat is Murfreesboro. Pike County is Arkansas's 25th county, formed on November 1, 1833, and named for Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, the explorer for whom Pikes Peak is named. It is an alcohol prohibition or dry county. History The first known residents of the area now considered Pike County were Native Americans. The Quapaw tribe was prominent in the area, as well as the Kadohadacho, and Cahinnio tribes. Expeditions led by Hernando de Soto and Sieur de La Salle passed through the area. Around 1800, the Kadohadocho tribe migrated to Texas to avoid further repeated attacks by the Osage, who would venture in from the Oklahoma area. Pike County was part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and on November 1, 1833, Pike County was created out of Clark and Hempstead counties by the Arkansas territorial legislature and named after Zebulon Pike. Pike County Courthouse (Murfreesboro, Arkansas)
The Pike County Courthouse is located at Courthouse Square in the center of Murfreesboro, Arkansas, United States. The two-story Art Deco structure was designed by the Texarkana firm of Witt, Seibert & Halsey, and built in 1931–32. It is the county's fourth courthouse, all of which were built at or near the location of this one. A near duplicate of the Sevier County Courthouse in DeQueen, it is the only major Art Deco structure in the county. Antoine, Arkansas
Antoine is a town in Pike County, Arkansas, United States, along the Antoine River. The population was 117 according to the 2010 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 km (0.5 mi), all land. History The town of Antoine began as a stopping point on the old Southwest Trail to Texas in the early 19th century. It was named for a French trapper who was found dead at his camp along the road (the site of the present town cemetery). The only identification found on the man was his first name, "Antoine". He was buried on the hill by the river and the gravesite became a landmark for travelers. Eventually, the name was given to the river and to the town that grew up beside it. Antoine's grave is located within the bounds of the town cemetery, although the marker has disappeared over time. 4th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (Confederate)
The 4th Arkansas Infantry (August 17, 1861 – April 26, 1865) was a Confederate States Army infantry regiment from the state of Arkansas during the American Civil War. The 4th Arkansas served throughout the war in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, western theater, seeing action in the Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia campaigns. Following its depletion in numbers the regiment was consolidated several times with other Arkansas regiments, finally merging in 1865 into the 1st Arkansas Consolidated Mounted Rifles.
