Antoine, Arkansas
Antoine is a town in Pike County, Arkansas, United States, along the Antoine River. The population was 117 according to the 2010 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 km (0.5 mi), all land. History The town of Antoine began as a stopping point on the old Southwest Trail to Texas in the early 19th century. It was named for a French trapper who was found dead at his camp along the road (the site of the present town cemetery). The only identification found on the man was his first name, "Antoine". He was buried on the hill by the river and the gravesite became a landmark for travelers. Eventually, the name was given to the river and to the town that grew up beside it. Antoine's grave is located within the bounds of the town cemetery, although the marker has disappeared over time. Olen Hendrix
Olen Hendrix (July 12, 1909 – August 5, 1998) was a businessman, banker, and state legislator in Arkansas. He served in the Arkansas Senate from 1959–1982. He served as President of the Arkansas Senate in 1971. He was born in Pike County, Arkansas. He was one of two owners of Magnolia Manor in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He was educated up to the 8th grade. He served on the Harding University Board of Trustees. He received an honorary degree from the university. A building at the university is named for him. He married Carmen Cornish in 1929 and they had four children including Gerald Hendrix, who served in the Arkansas House of Representatives. He is buried at the Antoine Cemetery. Arkansas Highway 26 (AR 26) is a designation for two state highways in Arkansas. One segment of runs from U.S. Route 371 (US 371) east of Lockesburg east to Highway 51 west of Arkadelphia. A second segment of runs from Interstate 30 (I-30) west of Gum Springs east to the Alcoa plant east of Gum Springs. Southwest Trail
The Southwest Trail was a 19th-century pioneer route that was the primary passageway for American settlers bound for Texas. History The Southwest Trail, also known as the Old Military Road, replaced the older Natchitoches Trace, which ran from the mouth of the Missouri River, near present-day St. Louis, Missouri to present-day Fulton, Arkansas on the Red River.
