Penyrheol, Swansea
Penyrheol ( cy, Pen-yr-heol) is a suburban district of Swansea, Wales falling within the Penyrheol ward. Penyrheol is located about north west of Swansea city centre in northwest Gorseinon. Penyrheol has two schools: a primary school and Penyrheol Comprehensive School. The latter was destroyed by arsonists in the early hours of Saturday 18 March 2006 causing 10 million pounds worth of damage. This caused much disruption to the pupils and families of the communities of Penyrheol, Gorseinon and Loughor. The destroyed teaching block was rebuilt at a cost of £9.9m and lessons began in the new block on 4 September 2009. Penyrheol Leisure centre is the local sports facility which incorporates a swimming pool, gymnasium and theatre. The swimming pool is the home of Penyrheol Swimming Club, the only swimming club in Swansea to have achieved the Dragon Mark Award. Swansea City Centre
Swansea city centre in Swansea, Wales, contains the main shopping, leisure and nightlife district in Swansea. Gorseinon
Gorseinon is a town within the City and County of Swansea, Wales, near the Loughor estuary. It was a small village until the late 19th century when it grew around the coal mining and tinplate industries. It is situated in the north west of Swansea City Centre, around north west of the city centre. Gorseinon is a local government community with an elected town council. The population of the Gorseinon town council area in the 2011 Census is 8,693. However, the ONS defines an area called the Gorseinon Urban Area which comprises all of the continuous built up area in and around Gorseinon. Penyrheol Comprehensive School
Penyrheol Comprehensive School is a secondary school in Gorseinon, Swansea, Wales. Admissions It has around 1,000 pupils from the Penyrheol, Gorseinon, and Loughor areas. It isituatedjust east of the B4296, accessed via two miles along the A4240 from junction 47 of the M4. It does not have a sixth form. It serves Gorseinon, Loughor, Penyrheol, Kingsbridge and Garden Village. History It was formerly administered by West Glamorgan County Council (based in Swansea). 1976 fire The school had to be rebuilt due to a fire in 1976 which destroyed half of the school. Thirty years later, much the same thing would happen again and a similar financial shortfall in the cost from what was available from insurance cover. Loughor
Loughor () ( cy, Casllwchwr) is a Welsh town in the City and County of Swansea, within the historic county boundaries of Glamorgan, Wales. It lies on the estuary of the River Loughor. The town has a community council under the name Llwchwr. The town is bordered by the communities of Bynea in Carmarthenshire, Grovesend (Pengelli), Gowerton (Tre-Gwŷr), and Gorseinon. Loughor is part of the built-up area of Gorseinon. Etymology The town's name has been called "possibly the oldest name in Gower", dating back to the Roman era. It derives from the name of the Roman fort of Leucarum. History The town includes the site of the Roman fort of Leucarum, over which the Norman Loughor Castle was built in 1106.
