Pello (formerly Turtola) is a municipality of Finland. It is located approximately north of the Arctic Circle in the western part of the province of Lapland, and is part of the Lapland region. The municipality is on the national border with Sweden, by the Tornionjoki-river. The municipality has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . History The name of Pello is ultimately derived from the word ''pelto'', field; which may have been the original name of the village. The weak grade stem of ''pelto'' is ''pello-'' (e.g. ''pellon'' - genitive case form of ''pelto''), through which the name was corrupted to its current form. Pello Railway Station
Pello railway station is located in the municipality of Pello in the Lapland Province of Finland. The station is located about 121 kilometres north from the Tornio railway station, and about 62 kilometres south from the Kolari railway station. Most trains at Pello are hauled by VR Class Dr16 diesel locomotives. The station is not to be confused with the Pelto halt, a former halt located on the track between Helsinki and Turku. Building structure The station is basic, with one solitary unpaved platform, though there is a small wooden bench with a roof. The platform of the station is 26.5 centimeters above the ground, and has a total length of 454 meters. The station has four track, with one platform track, one side track, and two loading tracks. Operation The track from Kaulinranta railway station to Pello was built in 1964, and in the next year, the track was extended from Pello to Sieppijärvi railway station. Kolari is a municipality of Finland at the Swedish border, which follows the Torne River, the longest free-flowing river in Europe. It is located in the region of Lapland. Eero Antero Mäntyranta (20 November 1937 – 30 December 2013) was one of the most successful Finnish cross-country skiers. Paavo Lipponen
Paavo Tapio Lipponen (; born 23 April 1941) is a Finnish politician and former reporter. He was prime minister of Finland from 1995 to 2003, and chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Finland from 1993 to 2005. He also served as speaker of the Parliament of Finland from 2003 to 2007 and was his party's nominee in the 2012 Finnish presidential election but received only 6.7% of the votes, making it the biggest defeat the Social Democratic Party had ever received in Finnish presidential elections at the time. Kaarlo Castrén
Kaarlo Castrén (28 February 1860 – 19 November 1938) was a Finnish politician and Prime Minister of Finland. He represented the National Progressive Party. Biography Castrén was born in Turtola and graduated in 1887 as a Bachelor of Law. From 1888 to 1892, he worked in the finance division of the Senate of Finland, and from 1888 to 1898 in the Castrén & Snellman attorneys-at-law office. From 1892 to 1904, Castrén was a member of the board in the Kansallis-Osake-Pankki bank. He attended the state board meetings in 1894 and from 1905 to 1906. He was Senator from 1908 to 1909, after which he founded an attorney-at-law office. In 1916, Castrén was elected as the director of Kansallis-Osake-Pankki.
