Paysandú () is the capital and most populous city of the Paysandú Department in western Uruguay. Located on the banks of the Uruguay River, it is the country's fourth-largest city and a vital cultural and economic hub, with agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing serving as key industries. Located in the southwestern part of the department, across from the Argentine city of Colón in Entre Ríos Province, it was founded in the mid-18th century and is known as the for its rich history, particularly its resistance during the Siege of Paysandú in 1864-65. History It was founded in October 1756 and had acquired the status of "Villa" (town) before the independence of Uruguay. On 8 June 1863, its status was elevated to "Ciudad" (city) by the Act of Ley Nº 780. General Leandro Gomez led Uruguayan forces to save the town from an invasion by Brazilian forces in 1864–1865. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Benedict of Palermo () is a Roman Catholic parish church in Paysandú, Uruguay. History The parish was established in 1805. The current temple was built in 1860, severely damaged during the siege of Paysandú (1864-1865) and rebuilt afterwards. It is dedicated to saint Benedict the Moor and the Virgin of the Rosary. In 1906 a Walcker organ was inaugurated. In 1949, Pope Pius XII proclaimed it basilica minor. Currently, a fundraising committee is advocating its refurbishment, understanding that, apart from its great religious and historic significance, this temple is also the venue of important cultural events.Let's refurbish the Basilica of Paysandú

Paysandú Airport
Tydeo Larre Borges International Airport () is a general aviation airport serving Paysandú, capital of the Paysandú Department of Uruguay. The airport is south of the city. It is named in honour of Tydeo Larre Borges, a pioneer of Uruguayan and international aviation, who was the first South American aviator to cross the South Atlantic. The airport has been served by government air service provider TAMU (es) and charter operator Aviasur. In December 2024 the airport was reopened after refurbishment as part of the overall plan for Uruguay’s international airports. Improvements include resurfacing of the main runway along with new runway LED lighting, LED taxiway lighting and approach lights.
