Paqtnkek-Niktuek No. 23, formerly Pomquet and Afton 23, is a Miꞌkmaq reserve located in Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. It is one of three reserves owned by the Paqꞌtnkek First Nation. The Mi'kmaq (also ''Mi'gmaq'', ''Lnu'', ''Mi'kmaw'' or ''Mi'gmaw''; ; , and formerly Micmac) are an Indigenous group of people of the Northeastern Woodlands, native to the areas of Canada's Atlantic Provinces, primarily Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland, and the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec as well as Native Americans in the northeastern region of Maine. Paqꞌtnkek First Nation
Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation (pronounced buck-n-keg) is a Mi'kmaq Band in northeastern Nova Scotia. Its populated reserve is Paqtnkek-Niktuek 23. As of December 2019 the total registered population was 598. It is a member of the Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq. The name Paqtnkek means “by the bay” or "Above the water (but at a distance from the ocean)". The area has long been important to Mi'kmaq for the fishing of eel and other species. Highway 104 in Nova Scotia, Canada, runs from Fort Lawrence at the New Brunswick border near Amherst to River Tillard near St. Peter's. Except for the portion on Cape Breton Island between Port Hawkesbury and St. Peter's, it forms the main route of the Trans-Canada Highway across the province. Highway 104 mostly supplants the former route of Trunk 4.
