The Notre Dame Church () is a church in Șimleu Silvaniei, Romania. The church was built by the Romanian Greek Catholic community between 1871 and 1873. The iconostasis and peinture were completed in 1893, while Alimpiu Barboloviciu served as vicar. Șimleu Silvaniei (; , ) is a town in Sălaj County, Crișana, Romania with a population of 13,948 people (2021 census). It is located near the ancient Dacian fortress Dacidava. Three villages are administered by the town: Bic (''Bükk''), Cehei (''Somlyócsehi''), and Pusta (''Csehipuszta''). History Ancient times Before the Roman conquest of Dacia, Șimleu was a political, social and administrative Dacians, Dacian centre, of high importance. Seven Dacian fortresses, some with associated settlements, were arranged in an arc shape around the hills of Șimleu. They had a strategic role in supervising the trade along the salt road coming from areas around Napoca (ancient city), Napoca, Potaissa, and modern Dej, and heading to Pannonia. The Romanian Greek Catholic Church or Romanian Church United with Rome is a '' sui iuris'' Eastern Catholic Church, in full union with the Catholic Church. It has the rank of a Major Archiepiscopal Church and it uses the Byzantine liturgical rite in the Romanian language. It is part of the Major Archiepiscopal Churches of the Catholic Church that are not distinguished with a patriarchal title. In Eastern Christianity, an iconostasis () is a wall of icons and religious paintings, separating the nave from the sanctuary in a Church (building), church. Alimpiu Barbuloviciu (Chilioara, August 6, 1843 – Bocșa, Sălaj, Bocşa, December 10, 1914) was the Vicar Forane of the Greek Catholic Vicariate of Șimleu Silvaniei (1873–1913) and the head of the branch of Asociația Transilvană pentru Literatura Română și Cultura Poporului Român, Astra in Sălaj County. Biography His parents came at Chilioara, Sălaj from Craciunel, Coșeiu, Sălaj County. Alimpiu Barbulovici was born to Alexandru Barbolovici (1807 – 19 January 1869) and Sofia Pop (they got married in 1831) on August 6, 1843. He attended school in Șimleu Silvaniei, Cluj-Napoca, Cluj, Satu Mare, Trnava, and Central Seminary in Budapest. He was a priest at Gherla, Borșa, Cluj and on 6 September 1873 was appointed vicar of Șimleu Silvaniei. The Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People (, ASTRA) is a cultural association founded in 1861 in Sibiu (Hermannstadt). It had an important role in the cultural life and the movement of national awakening for the Romanians in Transylvania.
