Northwest High School is a secondary school in Grand Island, Nebraska, United States, and is part of the Northwest Public Schools district. It was founded in 1963. It is accredited by AdvancED. The school serves students in grades nine through twelve. Enrollment at the high school was 719 as of December 2016. Northwest High School colors are black and gold. The mascot is a Viking, and pupils are referred to as Northwest Vikings. Northwest High School is a member of the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA). The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) is a statewide organization which oversees interscholastic competition between high schools in the state of Nebraska. The NSAA is the only interscholastic activities association in Nebraska, thus, it serves both public and private schools. Classification The NSAA divides schools into classes, which are continuously assessed by examination of the size of the school's enrollment. Each activity has a varying number of classes, based on the amount of participating schools and the nature of the activity. Grand Island Senior High is the only high school in the Grand Island Public Schools (GIPS) system in Nebraska, United States. It has had several buildings over its history. The official mascot is the Islander, a tall man in a tropical grass skirt. Viking Saga Censorship Incident
In June 2022, the ''Viking Saga'', the student newspaper of Northwest High School (Grand Island, Nebraska), Northwest High School in Grand Island, Nebraska, in the United States, published an issue that discussed Pride Month and other LGBT, LGBTQ-related topics.
