Nick Howard (baseball)
Nick Paul Howard (born April 16, 1993) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played college baseball at Virginia. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft. Amateur career Howard attended St. John's College High School in Washington, DC. Howard was both a pitcher and infielder at the University of Virginia. As a freshman in 2012, he appeared in 19 games as a relief pitcher and also had 52 at-bats in 26 games. As a pitcher he was 3–0 and had a 2.81 earned run average (ERA) and 37 strikeouts in innings. As a batter he hit .346/.435/.404. As a sophomore in 2013, he appeared in 13 games as a pitcher with 12 starts and 50 games as a batter. He was 6–4 with a 3.38 ERA and 52 strikeouts in innings. In baseball, a closing pitcher, more frequently referred to as a closer (abbreviated CL), is a relief pitcher who specializes in getting the final out (baseball), outs in a close game when his team is leading. The role is often assigned to a team's best reliever. Before the 1990s, pitchers in similar roles were referred to as a fireman and stopper. A small number of closers have won the Cy Young Award. The Lake Country DockHounds are a professional baseball team that is based in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. The DockHounds currently play in the American Association of Professional Baseball, an official Partner League of Major League Baseball. The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB) is a professional independent baseball league in the United States. It is an official MLB Partner League based in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States, and the headquarters are located at Penn Medicine Park in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Atlantic League operates in cities not served by Major League Baseball (MLB) or Minor League Baseball (MiLB) teams; most of its teams are within suburbs and exurbs too close to other teams in the organized baseball system to have minor league franchises of their own. The York Revolution is an American professional minor-league baseball team based in York, Pennsylvania. It is a member of the North Division of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, an independent "partner league" of Major League Baseball. The Chattanooga Lookouts are a Minor League Baseball team of the Southern League and the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
