NBA Development League
The NBA G League, or simply the G League, is a professional basketball league in North America that serves as the developmental league of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The league comprises 31 teams; as of the 2024–25 season, all are single-affiliated or owned by an NBA team except for the independent Mexico City Capitanes. The league was founded in 2001 as the National Basketball Development League (NBDL), renamed the NBA Development League (NBA D-League) in 2005. It received its present name in 2017 under a deal with Gatorade, becoming the first U.S. professional sports league named for an advertiser. Initially eight teams, the league expanded after 2005 under a plan by NBA commissioner David Stern to develop it into a true minor-league farm system, with each team affiliated with one or more NBA teams. 2001–02 National Basketball Development League Season
The 2001–02 NBDL season was the inaugural season for the National Basketball Development League. The league started with eight teams: Asheville Altitude, Columbus Riverdragons, Fayetteville Patriots, Greenville Groove, Huntsville Flight, Mobile Revelers, North Charleston Lowgators and Roanoke Dazzle. The season ended with the Groove defeating the Lowgators 2–0 in the best-of-three Finals series to win the inaugural NBDL championship. NBA TV Canada is a Canadian English language discretionary specialty channel owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE). Russell T. "Russ" Granik (born July 10, 1948) is an American sports executive who served as Deputy Commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 22 years. During his professional career, Granik served as the announcer of second-round picks in the NBA draft and in later years, the television host of the NBA Draft Lottery. NBA Deputy Commissioner Granik was the lead negotiator for the NBA for the past four collective bargaining negotiations with the NBA players' union. David Stern
David Joel Stern (September 22, 1942 – January 1, 2020) was an American lawyer and business executive who was the commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1984 to 2014. Stern oversaw NBA basketball's growth into one of the world's most popular sports during the 1990s and 2000s. He is credited with developing and broadening the NBA's audience, especially internationally by setting up training camps, playing exhibition games, and recruiting more international players. The Mexico City Capitanes () are a Mexican professional basketball team based in Mexico City. The Capitanes competed as a member club in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) for its first three seasons and the franchise is currently a member of the NBA G League. The team plays their home games in Mexico City Arena. The Capitanes were established before the 2017–18 season, after the Mexican capital had been without a basketball team for a decade. 2024–25 NBA G League Season
The 2024–25 NBA G League season was the 24th season of the NBA G League, the minor league basketball league of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The season consists of each team playing 16 Tip–Off Tournament games starting November 8, followed by the top eight teams playing in the Winter Showcase, which is then followed by 34 regular-season games for each team starting December 27.
