The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (, abbreviated MAPA) is a federal department in Brazil. The jurisdiction of this ministry is to formulate and implement policies for agribusiness development, integrating the aspects of market, technological, organizational and environmental care for the consumers of the country and abroad, promoting food security, income generation and employment, reducing inequalities and increasing social inclusion. The Ministry was founded during the Brazilian Empire in 1860. Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias (; 25 August 1803 – 7 May 1880), nicknamed "The Peacemaker" and "The Iron Duke", was an army officer, politician and monarchist of the Empire of Brazil. In 1823 he fought as a young officer in the Brazilian War for Independence against Portugal, then spent three years in Brazil's southernmost province, Cisplatina, as the government unsuccessfully resisted that province's secession in the Cisplatine War. Pedro Luís Pereira de Sousa (December 13, 1839 – July 16, 1884) was a Brazilian poet, politician, orator and lawyer, adept of the " Condorist" movement. He is the patron of the 31st chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Life Pereira de Sousa was born in Araruama in 1839. He made his primary studies in the Instituto Freeze, in Nova Friburgo, where he met Casimiro de Abreu. Graduated in Law in the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo in 1860, he established himself as a lawyer in Rio de Janeiro.
