Minas, Uruguay
Minas () is the capital of the Lavalleja Department in Uruguay. As of the census of 2011, it is the twelfth-most populated city in the country. Geography The city is located in the south of the department, on the intersection of Route 8 (Uruguay), Route 8 with Route 12 (Uruguay), Route 12. It lies between hill ranges and the basins of the Arroyo San Francisco and Arroyo Campanero streams. History A town was founded here in 1783 as "Villa de la Concepción de las Minas" when a number of families from the Asturias and Galicia (Spain), Galicia regions of Spain settled in the area following a frustrated attempt to populate Patagonia. The idea of a city in the area was first raised in 1753 by Jose Joaquin de Viana, the governor of Montevideo, who wanted to create a population centre in "the zones of the mines". Uruguay consists of 19 Department (country subdivision), departments (''departamentos''). Each department has a legislature, called a Departmental Board, and a chief executive called an ''Intendant (government official)#Uruguay, Intendente''. Carlos Paravís
Carlos Ernesto Paravís Martínez (1968 – 21 May 2024) was a Uruguayan physician and folk singer. Biography Paravís was born in Minas, Uruguay, to Carlos Paravís, a physician and notable folk singer also known as Santiago Chalar, and Adela Martínez Graña. He had three siblings: Adela, Santiago, and Isabel. He studied medicine in Montevideo. Like his father he devoted himself to Uruguayan folk music. He developed a musical career in the name of keeping alive the memory and songs of his father. Paravís died from esophageal cancer on 21 May 2024, at the age of 56. Gustavo Trelles (born 15 November 1955 in Minas, Uruguay, Minas) is a Uruguayan former rallying, rally driver. He competed actively in the World Rally Championship from 1988 World Rally Championship season, 1988 to 1993 World Rally Championship season, 1993, mainly with a Lancia Delta Integrale, and from 1996 World Rally Championship season, 1996 to 2002 World Rally Championship season, 2002, mainly with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. In the WRC, Trelles' best event result was third at the 1992 Rally Argentina with the Delta HF Integrale. Juan José Morosoli (January 19, 1899 – December 29, 1957) was a Uruguayan writer. His masterpiece is ''Perico'', a collection of short stories for children, which included "Arenero" and "La Querencia Olvidada" in 1947. Biography Juan José Morosoli was born on January 19, 1899, in Minas, Lavalleja, Uruguay. His father was a Swiss immigrant who worked as a bricklayer. When he was a child he had to quit school on second grade due to economic problems his family were having. He was a self-made person. At the age of 9, he started working at a bookstore for his uncle, first as a courier and later as a shop assistant. In 1920, he opened a café with two partners in Montevideo, Uruguay. In 1923, he wrote for many newspapers including ''La Unión'' from Minas, '' Marcha'', ''Mundo Uruguayo'' and '' El Día'' from Montevideo. He also wrote some theatre plays between 1923 and 1928. Juan Antonio Lavalleja y de la Torre (June 24, 1784 – October 22, 1853) was an Uruguayan Libertadores, libertador, revolutionary, military general, and political figure. He was born in Minas, Uruguay, Minas, in a region now named after him as the Lavalleja Department of Uruguay. Pre-Independence role Lavalleja led the group called the Thirty-Three Orientals during Uruguay's Declaration of Independence from the Empire of Brazil in 1825. His leadership of this group has taken on somewhat mythic proportions in popular Uruguayan historiography. Before leading the Thirty-Three, he had been captured by the Portuguese Empire, Portuguese in 1818 and returned to Uruguay in 1821. The Redemptorists, officially named the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (), abbreviated CSsR, is a Catholic clerical religious congregation of pontifical right for men (priests and brothers). It was founded by Alphonsus Liguori at Scala, Italy, for the purpose of labouring among the neglected country people around Naples.
