Carlos Paravís
Carlos Ernesto Paravís Martínez (1968 – 21 May 2024) was a Uruguayan physician and folk singer. Biography Paravís was born in Minas, Uruguay, to Carlos Paravís, a physician and notable folk singer also known as Santiago Chalar, and Adela Martínez Graña. He had three siblings: Adela, Santiago, and Isabel. He studied medicine in Montevideo. Like his father he devoted himself to Uruguayan folk music. He developed a musical career in the name of keeping alive the memory and songs of his father. Paravís died from esophageal cancer on 21 May 2024, at the age of 56. Minas, Uruguay
Minas () is the capital of the Lavalleja Department in Uruguay. As of the census of 2011, it is the twelfth-most populated city in the country. Geography The city is located in the south of the department, on the intersection of Route 8 (Uruguay), Route 8 with Route 12 (Uruguay), Route 12. It lies between hill ranges and the basins of the Arroyo San Francisco and Arroyo Campanero streams. History A town was founded here in 1783 as "Villa de la Concepción de las Minas" when a number of families from the Asturias and Galicia (Spain), Galicia regions of Spain settled in the area following a frustrated attempt to populate Patagonia. The idea of a city in the area was first raised in 1753 by Jose Joaquin de Viana, the governor of Montevideo, who wanted to create a population centre in "the zones of the mines". Carlos Alfredo Paravís Salaverry, known as Santiago Chalar (September 25, 1938 – November 21, 1994), was a Uruguayan physician traumathologist, poet, songwriter, musician, guitarist and singer. He studied music and medicine. He used an alias Santiago to pay homage to a friend of his who died in a plane accident and Chalar was one of his ancestors last name. In his artistic career he achieved recognition and fame. He obtained some music awards. He is considered one of the best Uruguayan folk music songwriters and singers. Biography Chalar was born on September 25, 1938 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He married Adela Martínez Graña, and they had 4 children: Adela, Carlos Paravís, Carlos, Santiago, and Isabel.
