Milan Gaľa
Milan Gaľa (21 January 1953 in Jarovnice – 1 June 2012 near Košice) was a Slovak politician and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) with the Slovenská demokraticka a krestanska unia, part of the European People's Party and sat on the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education. He was a substitute for the Committee on Development and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. He was also a member of the Delegation for relations with the Gulf States and Yemen. Jarovnice
Jarovnice (; ) is a village and municipality in Sabinov District in the Prešov Region of north-eastern Slovakia. History In historical records, the village was first mentioned in 1260. Heavy rains on July 20 of 1998 brought about the worst floods in Slovak history, changing otherwise quiet rivers in eastern Slovakia into a lethal force. The wild, overflowing water rushed from the river bed, sweeping over and engulfing everything in its path. The tragic results of these destructive floods were 63 dead, over 3,000 people evacuated from their homes, and two thousand houses destroyed in dozens of communities. Geography and demography The municipality lies at an altitude of 441 meters and covers an area of 20.170 km². It has a population of 7,241 people. Jarovnice houses the largest community of Romani people in Slovakia, approximately 6900 people who constitute 88% of the local population. Lipany
Lipany ('lindens;' , , all lit. 'seven lindens') is a town in the Sabinov District, Prešov Region in northeastern Slovakia. History The first written mention about Lipany comes from 1312. It gained town privileges in the 16th century. Geography Lipany lies at an altitude of above sea level and covers an area of . The Torysa River flows through the town. It is away from Sabinov, from Prešov and from Stará Ľubovňa. In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a Municipal corporation, municipal government such as that of a city or a town. The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party (, SDKÚ-DS) is a liberal-conservative, Christian-democratic political party in Slovakia. The SDKÚ-DS was a member of the Centrist Democrat International and was a member of the European People's Party until 2018, when it was expelled due to inactivity. For 10 years, SDKÚ was a major centre-right political force in Slovakia. During their rule, Slovakia became member of the European Union and NATO, as well as put through economic reforms leading to the 00's economic boom. The party lost its significance in the 2012 parliamentary election, when it received only 6% of the popular vote.
