Massenet Festival
Massenet Festival is a wikt:biennale, biennale festival of music by French composer, Jules Massenet held in Saint-Étienne, France, close to the area where the composer was born. The first Massenet Festival took place in November 1990 when the opera ''Cléopâtre'' and the oratorio ''La Vierge'' were presented. In recent years, performances have been given in the Grand Théâtre Massenet, one of the theatres of the Opéra Théâtre de Saint-Etienne, and formerly known as L'Esplanade. History Appointed to run the in 1986, Jean-Louis Pichon invited Jean-Pierre Jacquillat to become musical director. Shortly afterwards, the elderly widow of a chief electrician at the Théâtre Eden handed over a mass of rare vocal scores, which included ''Amadis (Massenet), Amadis'' by Massenet. Béatrice Uria-Monzon
Béatrice Uria Monzon (born 28 December 1963 in Agen (Lot-et-Garonne)) is a French mezzo-soprano. Biography Daughter of the Spanish painter Antonio Uria-Monzon, Béatrice Uria Monzon studied at the secondary school Joseph Chaumié, at the Bernard Palissy d'Agen High School and at the Catholic High School St Jean de Lectoure (Gers) where she was introduced to singing in the choir of the high school led by Roland Fornerod. She then went to the University of Bordeaux. She entered the Conservatoire de Bordeaux, then joined the of Marseille, and the École d'art lyrique of the Paris Opera. She began her career as a lyric singer in 1987, as a mezzo-soprano. In 1989, she was Chérubin in Mozart's ''The Marriage of Figaro'' at the Opéra national de Lorraine. ''Le jongleur de Notre-Dame'' is a three-act opera (labelled in the programme as ''Miracle in Three Acts'') by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Maurice Léna. ''Roma'' is an opera in five acts by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Henri Cain based on the play ''Rome vaincue'' by Dominique-Alexandre Parodi. It was first performed at the Opéra de Monte Carlo on 17 February 1912. ''Roma'' was the last opera by Massenet to premiere in his lifetime. Three operas were subsequently premiered posthumously: ''Panurge (opera), Panurge'' (1913), ''Cléopâtre'' (1914) and ''Amadis (Massenet), Amadis'' (1922). ''Thaïs'' () is an opera, a ''comédie lyrique'' in three acts and seven tableaux, by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Louis Gallet, based on the novel ''Thaïs (novel), Thaïs'' by Anatole France. It was first performed at the Palais Garnier, Opéra Garnier in Paris on 16 March 1894, starring the American soprano Sibyl Sanderson, for whom Massenet had written the title role. Laurent Campellone (born January 23, 1972) is a French conductor. Known around the world for his expertise in the French opera of the Romantic era, he is often compared to Michel Plasson. Critics consider him today as "one of the best defenders in the world" of this repertoire. He is currently the General Manager of Opéra de Tours. The music was composed by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Henri Cain and Arthur Bernède, based on Sappho (novel), the novel (1884) of the same name by Alphonse Daudet. It was first performed on 27 November 1897 by the Opéra Comique at the Théâtre de la Ville, Théâtre Lyrique on the Place du Châtelet in Paris with Emma Calvé as Fanny Legrand. A charming and effective piece, the success of which is highly dependent on the charisma of its lead soprano, it has never earned a place in the standard operatic repertory. ''Le Cid'' is an opera in four acts and ten tableaux by Jules Massenet to a France, French libretto by Adolphe d'Ennery, Louis Gallet and Édouard Blau. It is based on Le Cid, the play of the same name by Pierre Corneille. Laurent Naouri, Chevalier L.H. (born May 23, 1964) is a French bass-baritone. Initially beginning his education at the École Centrale de Lyon, Naouri decided to concentrate on opera in 1986 and continued his musical studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where in his final year in June 1991 he appeared as the Director in ''Les mamelles de Tirésias''.
