Marian Spychała Speedway Stadium
The Marian Spychała Speedway Stadium () formerly the Stadion Kolejarz, is an 8,000-capacity motorcycle speedway stadium in Opole, Poland. The venue is used by the speedway team Kolejarz Opole, who compete in the Team Speedway Polish Championship. History The stadium was built before World War II and featured an athletics track. During the war the stadium (which could hold 2,600 spectators of which 600 were seated) was destroyed. The stadium was rebuilt as a speedway stadium in 1957. It underwent an expansion in 1960 with 5,000 seats and 3,000 standing areas, before becoming the home of Kolejarz Opole in 1961. Since 1988 the speedway track has measured 321 metres. On 2 July 2015, the stadium was renamed after a former rider, Marian Spychała, who was a prominent team manager for Kolejarz Opole. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Kolejarz Opole (Railwayman Opole) is a motorcycle speedway team based in Opole, Poland. They currently race in the Polish Speedway Second League (2. Liga). History The club race at the Marian Spychała Speedway Stadium () or full name Mariana Spychała Municipal Speedway Stadium, named after a former rider and coach Marian Spychała. The Team Speedway Polish Championship ( Polish: ''Drużynowe Mistrzostwa Polski, DMP'') is an annual speedway event held each year in different Polish clubs organized by the Polish Motor Union (PZM) since 1948. In 2000, the First Division was renamed Ekstraliga, and the number of teams was reduced. The team winning the league is awarded a gold medal and declared Polish Team Champions. Marian Spychała
Marian Spychała (3 April 1932 – 26 February 2015) was a motorcycle speedway rider and manager from Poland. He managed the Poland national speedway team. Career Spychała started his speedway career with Kolejarz Rawicz during the 1949 Polish speedway season. He remained with the club for eight years, in which time he won a silver (1955) and bronze medal (1954) with the team in the Team Speedway Polish Championship. After spells with Sparta Wrocław and Unia Tarnów he joined Stal Rzeszów for the 1961 Polish speedway season. He rode with the team for ten years until 1970 and won several team medals, including the gold medal for the league championship in 1961.
