Marcus Berquist
Marcus Berquist (1934 – November 2, 2010) was one of the founders of Thomas Aquinas College, a professor, and an expert on the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. He received his bachelor's degree in Philosophy from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. and his licentiate degree in Philosophy from Université Laval in Quebec. He nearly completed his Ph.D. from Université Laval with Charles De Koninck as his mentor but did not due to De Koninck's death. He taught at Thomas Aquinas College for over thirty-one years. Thomas Aquinas College
Thomas Aquinas College is a Private Roman Catholic liberal arts college with its main campus in Ventura County, California. A second campus opened in Northfield, Massachusetts in 2018. Its education is based on the Great Books and seminar method. It is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. It is endorsed by The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. In December 2017 the Thomas wildfire, the largest of the season's wildfires, started near, and was named after, the college. Academics Thomas Aquinas offers one degree program: Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts. As a matter of principle, to ensure the institution's autonomy, the school does not accept any direct government funding; neither does it receive funding from the Catholic Church. Rather, it offers need-based scholarships funded by the private donations of individuals and foundations. Charles De Koninck
Charles De Koninck (29 July 1906 – 13 February 1965) was a Belgian-Canadian Thomist philosopher and theologian. As director of the Department of Philosophy at the Université Laval in Quebec, he influenced Catholic philosophy in French Canada and also influenced Catholic philosophers in English Canada and the United States. The author of many books and articles in French and English, he contributed to a variety of philosophical fields including natural philosophy, philosophy of science, philosophy of mathematics, and political philosophy, but he also wrote on theology, especially Mariology. De Koninck was the founder of the so-called Laval School of philosophy, and mentored a number of philosophers, including Ralph McInerny, who published an English translation of De Koninck's collected works.
