Manx Labour Party
The Manx Labour Party is a political party on the Isle of Man that was founded in 1918. Policies The Manx Labour Party published a manifesto of policies in 2021. It proposed increasing government spending on education to a minimum of 4% of GDP, stated opposition to privatisation of the healthcare sector, and supported increasing the statutory minimum wage. History The Manx Labour Party was formed in 1918, making it the first organised political party on the island. Its formation was prompted by the high level of indirect taxation as a proportion of the Isle of Man Government's income, the relatively low wages, and the lack of social legislation. The founders of the party saw that as being unfair to the poorest in society and wanted to increase the reliance on income taxation instead, and to introduce social legislation such as old age pensions. Garff
Garff () is one of the six sheadings of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) and consists of the two historic parishes of Lonan (parish), Lonan and Maughold (parish), Maughold. Before 1796 it also included the parish of Onchan (parish), Onchan. Administratively, since May 2016 the sheading of Garff has been covered by a single Garff local authority, a parish district, formed by merging the former village district of Laxey with the parish districts of Lonan and Maughold. The town of Ramsey, Isle of Man, Ramsey, which is administered separately, covers areas of two historic parishes (Maughold, and Lezayre in the sheading of Ayre). It is treated as part of Garff for some purposes, e.g. the coroner. Douglas South
Douglas South is a House of Keys constituency in Douglas, Isle of Man. Although the constituency is named Douglas South, its current (2020) boundaries place it in the west rather than the south of Douglas. Like all the Keys constituencies, the constituency returns two members to the House of Keys. Following a general election in October 2021, the incumbents are Mrs Claire Christian and Sarah Maltby. 2021 Manx General Election
General elections were held in the Isle of Man on 23 September 2021. A record ten women were elected, twice as many as the five elected at the previous election. For the first time, in two constituencies, both elected MHKs were women. Four government ministers failed to be re-elected. Electoral system The 24 members of the House of Keys are elected from 12 constituencies, each of which returns 2 members. Election is by multiple non-transferable vote in each constituency, with voters having two votes (although voters are not required to use both) for the two seats. The Chief Minister is appointed after a general election on nomination by the House of Keys. Candidates A total of 65 candidates ran. The incumbent Chief Minister, Howard Quayle (MHK for Middle) did not stand for re-election. David Clifford Cretney (born 15 January 1954) is a Manx people, Manx politician. Biography Before going into politics, Cretney was a shop manager (1977–85) and he was also a businessman in the period 1985–2012. He was, until March 2014, Department of Infrastructure (Isle of Man), Minister of Infrastructure in the Isle of Man Government, and had formerly headed the Departments of Department of Community, Culture and Leisure (Isle of Man), Community, Culture & Leisure, Department of Trade and Industry (Isle of Man), Trade & Industry, and Department of Tourism and Leisure, Tourism & Leisure. Peter Karran
Peter Karran (born 20 May 1960) is a Manx politician, who is a former leader of the Liberal Vannin Party and former Minister of Education and Children. He was a Member of the House of Keys for Middle, and then for Onchan, from 1985 to 2016. He was a member of the Manx Labour Party from 1981 but left in 2004. In August 2006 he founded the Liberal Vannin Party and became its first leader. Career Karran worked as a joiner. He stood for election in Middle in the 1981 Manx general election but was not elected. In 1985 he contested a by-election in Middle and was elected, becoming the youngest ever elected Member in the House of Keys. In the 1986 general election, Karran contested Onchan and was elected. He repeated his success in Onchan in general elections in 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011. He has been very popular ever since, topping the Onchan polls at most elections. Liberal Vannin Party
The Liberal Vannin Party (LVP; ) is a political party in the Isle of Man. It was founded in 2006 by Peter Karran, then an Independent MHK for Onchan. Karran had been, until 2004, a member of the Manx Labour Party. The "Vannin" in the party name is a form of the name of the Isle of Man in the native Manx Gaelic language, while "Liberal" is a reference to the general political position of the party. The party is currently led by Lawrie Hooper MHK. The Liberal Vannin Party put forward several candidates at the 2006 general election and had two MHKs elected. In the 2011 general election, they returned three MHKs. This result was mirrored in the 2016 general election, but one of these subsequently resigned from the party, and one died in 2020.
