Peter Karran
Peter Karran (born 20 May 1960) is a Manx politician, who is a former leader of the Liberal Vannin Party and former Minister of Education and Children. He was a Member of the House of Keys for Middle, and then for Onchan, from 1985 to 2016. He was a member of the Manx Labour Party from 1981 but left in 2004. In August 2006 he founded the Liberal Vannin Party and became its first leader. Career Karran worked as a joiner. He stood for election in Middle in the 1981 Manx general election but was not elected. In 1985 he contested a by-election in Middle and was elected, becoming the youngest ever elected Member in the House of Keys. In the 1986 general election, Karran contested Onchan and was elected. He repeated his success in Onchan in general elections in 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011. He has been very popular ever since, topping the Onchan polls at most elections. The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the "Keys of Man") and (the "Keys of Law"). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ("to choose"). However, a more likely explanation is that it is a mishearing of the Manx-language term for "four and twenty": , the House having always had 24 members. General elections were held on the Isle of Man on Thursday, 23 November 2006. The voting age was lowered to 16 at this election. As usual, the election was dominated by independents, who took 21 of the 24 seats. General elections were held on the Isle of Man on the 21 November 1996 to elect members to the House of Keys. Independents won 16 of the 24 seats, whilst the Manx Labour Party had its worst result since 1971, winning just two seats. 1991 Manx General Election
General elections were held on the Isle of Man on the 21 November 1991 to elect members to the island's lower house: the House of Keys. Independents dominated and won 21 of the 24 seats, whilst the Manx Labour Party once again won three seats. Electoral system The electoral system was changed in 1982 to single transferable vote with the Representation of the People (Preferential Voting) Act. Campaign A total of 73 candidates contested the elections, of which 68 ran as independents and five as party candidates. Mount Murray is a hill above sea level on the Isle of Man located at the northern end of Santon, near the boundaries with Marown and Braddan parishes. It is named after Lord Henry Murray, 4th Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man.
