Manuel Méndez Ballester
Manuel Méndez Ballester (4 August 1909 – 24 January 2002), was a Puerto Rican writer who also worked in journalism, radio broadcasting, television and teaching. Life and career José Manuel Epifanio Méndez Ballester, better known as Manuel Méndez Ballester was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, in 1909 to parents Andrés Méndez Licíaga and Juana Ballester González. In Aguadilla, he was raised and received his primary education. Relocating to New York in his teens, he initiated secondary schooling, but upon his return to Puerto Rico, continued his studies on his own. While still in his adolescence, and due to economic urgency, he began to work as a clerk in several commercial houses of Aguadilla and San Juan. He later served in the offices of the District Court of Aguadilla. Central Coloso
Central Coloso, also known as Coloso Sugar Cane Refinery, was a long-running sugarcane refinery in Aguada, Puerto Rico, Aguada, Puerto Rico. The Sugar refinery, refinery was established in late 19th century becoming one of the biggest sugar emporiums in the island. It remained operational until 2003, becoming the last sugarcane refinery to cease operations on the island. History Early years The Coloso origins begin in the 19th century, specifically towards the end of the 1820s when the ''Caño de las Nasas'' estate was founded in Aguada, Puerto Rico, Aguada. Luz Odilia Font ( Arocho; November 11, 1929 – February 9, 2022) was a Puerto Rican actress. She was perhaps better remembered for her role as "Clara" in the 2013 Puerto Rican film production, "The Condemned (2013 film), The Condemned". Life and career Born in San Sebastián, the daughter of a social worker mother, Font enjoyed music since an early age. At age nine, Font began a formal training in music by taking musical classes. Puerto Rican literature is the body of literature produced by writers of Puerto Rican descent. It evolved from the art of Oral literature, oral storytelling. Written works by the indigenous inhabitants of Puerto Rico were originally prohibited and repressed by the Spanish colonial government. It was not until the late 19th century, with the arrival of the first printing press and the founding of the Royal Academy of Belles Letters, that Puerto Rican literature began to flourish. The first writers to express their political views in regard to Spanish colonial rule of the island were journalists. After the United States invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish–American War and the island was ceded to the United States as a condition of the Treaty of Paris of 1898, writers and poets began to express their opposition of the new colonial rule by writing about patriotic themes.
