Makhachkala, previously known as Petrovskoye (1844–1857) and Port-Petrovsk (1857–1921), or by the local Kumyk language, Kumyk name of Anji, is the capital and List of cities and towns in Russia by population, largest city of Dagestan, Russia. Makhachkala Lighthouse
The Makhachkala Lighthouse is an operating lighthouse in the city Makhachkala, a capital of the Russian Republic of Dagestan. It is a landmark of the city. History The initiator of the construction of lighthouses in the Caspian Sea was the Caucasian governor M. S. Vorontsov. According to legend, the first lighthouse in the Port-Petrovsk Fortress was built in 1852 on the mountain Tarki-Tau, at the place where the Russian Emperor Peter the Great laid the first stone in the foundation of the Port-Petrovsk Fortress. Initially, it was a white tower, the light of eight lamps at a height of 75 meters above sea level was amplified by reflectors, the visibility of the light reached 18 miles. Tarki (, ; ) formerly also spelled Tarkou and also known as Tarku, is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) under the administrative jurisdiction of Sovetsky City District of the City of Makhachkala in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia, located on the Tarki-tau (') mountain. Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic
The Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (1921–1991), abbreviated as Dagestan ASSR or DASSR and also unofficially known as Soviet Dagestan or just simply Dagestan, was an autonomous republic of the Russian SFSR within the Soviet Union. This "Land of Mountains" was known also for having a "mountain of peoples," with more than thirty ethnic groups indigenous to the territory. Kumyk Language
Kumyk (,L. S. Levitskaya, "Kumyk language", in ''Languages of the world. Turkic languages'' (1997). , ) is a Turkic language spoken by about 520,000 people, mainly by the Kumyks, in the Dagestan, North Ossetia and Chechen republics of the Russian Federation. Until the 20th century Kumyk was the lingua franca of the Northern Caucasus. Classification Kumyk language belongs to the Kipchak-Cuman subfamily of the Kipchak family of the Turkic languages. It's a descendant of the Cuman language, with likely influence from the Khazar language, and in addition contains words from the Bulghar and Oghuz substratum.
