The Ambassador of Ireland to Great Britain is Ireland's foremost diplomatic representative in the United Kingdom and is in charge of Ireland's diplomatic mission in the UK. History The High Commission of the Irish Free State was established shortly after Irish secession from the United Kingdom. The first High Commissioner of the Irish Free State to the United Kingdom was James McNeill, who later became the second Governor-General of the state in 1928. From 1936, the Irish government regarded the state as being no longer a member of the British Commonwealth, but rather a state associated with it. Nonetheless, the office holder retained his title. In 1937, the Irish Free State was renamed Ireland so the High Commissioner’s title was changed to High Commissioner of Ireland to the United Kingdom. Martin Fraser
Martin Fraser (born 11 June 1970) is an Irish civil servant who served as the Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach from August 2011 to May 2022. He previously served as the Assistant Secretary General of the Department of the Taoiseach from 2007 to 2011. He holds a bachelor of commerce degree (1993) from University College Dublin and a master of science degree in economics from Trinity College Dublin. Fraser joined the Civil Service in 1986. Paul John Keating (born 18 January 1944) is an Australian former politician who served as the 24th prime minister of Australia from 1991 to 1996, holding office as the leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). He previously served as the treasurer of Australia in the Hawke government from 1983 to 1991 and as the seventh deputy prime minister of Australia from 1990 to 1991. Keating was born in Sydney and left school at the age of 14. He joined the Labor Party at the same age, serving a term as State President of Young Labor and working as a research assistant for a trade union. Daniel Mulhall (born 8 April 1955) is a retired Irish diplomat and a former Ambassador of Ireland to the United States. He has also been Ireland's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Germany and Malaysia. Education Born in Waterford, Ireland, Mulhall studied at University College Cork. He received a BA degree degree in 1975, a Higher Diploma in Education in 1978, and an MA in history in 1979. Career Mulhall joined Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs in 1978 as Third Secretary in the Economics Division. He then moved to the department's Development Cooperation Division, and was later posted in 1980 to the embassy in New Delhi. In 1983, Mulhall moved back to Dublin to work in the Political Division. Bobby McDonagh (born 29 June 1954) is a former Irish diplomat. Biography He was educated in Gonzaga College, Dublin and graduated from Balliol College, Oxford with an Master of Arts (MA) (Greats/Classics). He was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1974.
