Landesbühne
The term Landesbühne (federal state stage) or ''Landestheater'' (federal state theatre) is added to the name of some publicly owned theatre companies in Germany and Austria. These companies have a mandate to perform in areas without public theatres. Less than half of performances usually take place at the seat of a Landesbühne, thereby distinguishing them from the so called ''Stadttheater'' (city theatre) or ''Staatstheater'' (national theatre). Legal control can lie with the respective Bundesland or a collaboration of several municipalities and local authorities. The spectrum of presented productions can be very diverse. The repertoire can include all or parts of the popular disciplines: play, musical theatre (opera, operetta, musical), ballet, and children's and youth theatre. The Linz State Theatre () is a theatre in Linz, Austria. The largest theater in Upper Austria (OÖ), it consists of three venues: the Musiktheater am Volksgarten, the Schauspielhaus (formerly Großes Haus) and the Kammerspiele on the Promenade in Linz. The theater is managed by OÖ. Theater und Orchester, which also operates the Bruckner Orchester Linz and is wholly owned by the province of Upper Austria via the OÖ Landesholding. The Tyrolean State Theatre in Innsbruck () is the state theatre in Innsbruck, Austria, located near the historic Altstadt (Old Town) section of the city. The Salzburg State Theatre (''Salzburger Landestheater'') is a theatre situated in Salzburg, Austria, a venue for opera, theatre, and dance, contemporary and older works, with resident companies of actors, singers and dancers. The Landestheater Niederösterreich is a Schauspielhaus in the Lower Austrian provincial capital St. Pölten. History In the autumn of 1820, a military prison converted by master builder Josef Schwerdtfeger on today's Rathausplatz was opened as the first permanent theatre in St. Pölten, which also served as a ballroom. The first tenant was the theatre entrepreneur Leopold Hoch, who was followed by others.
