Kotto River
The Kotto River (or Koto River) is a tributary of the Oubangui River in the Central African Republic. Its source is on the south side of the Bongo Massif, near Mount Toussoro on the border between the Central African Republic and Sudan. It flows generally north-east to south-west for past Bria, joining the Ubangi River east of Mobaye. The river separates the Tondou Massif from the Mongos chain to the north. There are several rapids along its course. The Kotto River gives its name to two of the Central African Republic's sixteen prefectures, Haute-Kotto and Basse-Kotto Basse-Kotto is one of the 16 and the least populated prefecture of the Central African Republic. Kembé
Kembé is a town located in the Central African Republic Prefectures of the Central African Republic, prefecture of Basse-Kotto. The Kembe Falls, Kotto Falls double waterfall is nearby. History Kembé, together with nearby Dimbi, was captured by Séléka rebels on 20–21 January 2013. In November 2016 it was reported that Kembe was under control of rebels from Union for Peace in the Central African Republic. On 11 October 2017, 25 Muslim civilians were massacred by anti-balaka militiamen inside a mosque in the town of Kembe. As of June 2019 Kembe was under control of Anti-balaka. On 6 May 2021 the town was recaptured by government forces, however later it was captured by UPC rebels and as of April 2022 remains under UPC control. Bangui () (or Bangî in Sango, formerly written Bangi in English) is the capital and largest city of the Central African Republic. It was established as a French outpost in 1889 and named after its location on the northern bank of the Ubangi River (french: Oubangui); the Ubangi itself was named from the Bobangi word for the "rapids" located beside the settlement, which marked the end of navigable water north from Brazzaville. The majority of the population of the Central African Republic lives in the western parts of the country, in Bangui and the surrounding area. Bangassou is a city in the south eastern Central African Republic, lying on the north bank of the Mbomou River. It has a population of 24,447 (2003 census) and is the capital of the Mbomou prefecture. It is known for its wildlife, market, and nearby Bangassou Airport and is linked by ferry to the Democratic Republic of Congo on the south bank. The city is also home to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bangassou. Axmin Mining Camp and Kembé Falls are located in the area. History During the French colonial occupation of Congo Free State, the French military established a base at Bangassou. In 1922 the Spiritains established a Catholic mission in the town.
