Kittrell is an unincorporated community along U.S. Route 70S in Rutherford County, Tennessee, located seven miles east of Murfreesboro. It shares the zip code of 37149 assigned to Readyville. The community is named for Major Marion B. Kittrell who sold his farm and moved to the area around Cripple Creek on July 18, 1874. A post office was established in 1884 but discontinued with the adoption of rural free delivery around 1903. Kittrell has been home to several schools and churches over the years that have been disused or destroyed by fire. Readyville [] is an unincorporated community located primarily in Cannon County, Tennessee, United States and secondarily in Rutherford County, Tennessee, United States. It lies approximately halfway between Murfreesboro and Woodbury with an assigned zip code of 37149. Rural Free Delivery (RFD) was a program of the United States Post Office Department that began in the late 19th century to deliver mail directly to rural destinations. Previously, individuals living in remote homesteads had to pick up mail themselves at sometimes distant post offices or pay private carriers for delivery. RFD became a political football, with politicians promising it to voters, and benefitting themselves to reach voters. The proposal to offer free rural delivery was not universally embraced. Private carriers and local shopkeepers feared a loss of business. The United States Post Office Department began experiments with Rural Free Delivery as early as 1890. David Harrison Macon (October 7, 1870 – March 22, 1952), known professionally as Uncle Dave Macon, was an American old-time banjo player, singer, songwriter, and comedian. Known as "The Dixie Dewdrop", Macon was known for his chin whiskers, plug hat, gold teeth, and gates-ajar collar, he gained regional fame as a vaudeville performer in the early 1920s before becoming the first star of the Grand Ole Opry in the latter half of the decade.
