Kings Creek, South Carolina
Kings Creek (or King's Creek) is an unincorporated community in Cherokee County, South Carolina, United States. It is located in the vicinity of South Carolina Highways 5 and 97. Situated nearby is the NRHP-designated King's Creek Furnace Site. The name of the community comes from a local settler named King who lived close to the locale on the namesake Kings Creek. The settlement has a history of mining operations and represents the former Kings Creek Mining District, which held deposits of iron and copper sulfides. South of Kings Creek sits a historic gold mine bearing the locality's name. Railways have also seen historic prominence in the area, and the hamlet exists as the western terminus of the Triple C Rail Trail. Cherokee County is a county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 56,216. The county seat is Gaffney. The county was formed in 1897 from parts of York, Union, and Spartanburg Counties. It was named for the Cherokee people who historically occupied this area prior to European encounter. South Carolina Highway 5
South Carolina Highway 5 (SC 5) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The highway, signed as north-south, travels in a northwest-southeast direction connecting the cities of Rock Hill, York and Blacksburg. Route description SC 5 begins with a semi-interchange with US 521 near Van Wyck. Going northwesterly nearly its entire route, it crosses the Catawba River entering York County. In Lesslie, it joins U.S. Route 21 (US 21), crossing over Interstate 77 (I-77) before splitting in Rock Hill. South Carolina Highway 97 (SC 97) is a state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The highway connects Camden, Great Falls, Chester, and Hickory Grove. Route description SC 97 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 521 (US 521)/ US 601 (Broad Street) in Camden within Kershaw County, northeast of the Camden Country Club. The highway travels to the northwest and meets US 521 Truck/ US 601 Truck (Boykin Road) just before leaving the city limits of Camden. King's Creek Furnace Site (38CK71)
King's Creek Furnace Site (38CK71) is a historic archaeological site located near Kings Creek, Cherokee County, South Carolina, United States. The site contains a partially collapsed but well-preserved iron furnace built about 1838, retaining walls, sluiceway, stone dam abutments, stone building foundations, large piles of slag, and a large slag levee along the creek bank. It also includes the remains of the site's log framed dam. King's Creek Furnace Site is one of two remaining sites that can be associated with the King's Mountain Iron Company, a major iron manufacturing company that operated in present-day Cherokee County from about 1815 to about 1860. Triple C Rail Trail
The Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago or Triple C Rail Trail is a rail trail in the Piedmont region of north-central South Carolina. The trail begins just west of Tirzah, runs west through York, James Ross Wildlife Reservation (a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Management Area), Sharon, Hickory Grove, Smyrna, and ends near Kings Creek. Please note, as of 4/18/15 all sections of this trail (except for the part shared by the paved York Bicycle Trail) are so overgrown as to be impassible. Also there is no signage of any kind signifying it exits at all. Use discretion. Passable sections are indicated in Google Maps as dirt bicycle trails - 7/25/16 route does get overgrown as SCDOT does not maintain the trail although owns the full right of way, which is indicated by county GIS maps. Carolina Coastal Railway
Carolina Coastal Railway is a shortline railroad that operates several lines in North Carolina and one line in South Carolina. History CLNA was created in 1989 under the Thoroughbred Shortline Program of Norfolk Southern and was a subsidiary of Rail Link, Inc., which became a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming in 1995. The original line was from Pinetown, North Carolina to Belhaven. CLNA interchanged with NS at Pinetown. CLNA was acquired by Main Line Rail Management, Inc. in 2003. In 2006, CLNA began to serve a former NS branch between Whitney and Badin where Alcoa previously operated a large aluminum plant.
