Kaladesh
''Kaladesh'' is a ''Magic: The Gathering'' expansion block consisting of the sets ''Kaladesh'' and ''Aether Revolt''. The block debuted with the release of ''Kaladesh'' on September 30, 2016. The block is set on the plane of Kaladesh, the original home of planeswalker Chandra Nalaar, and features an emphasis on artifacts, their creators and the magical aether which powers them. Plot The block focuses on a Steampunk aesthetic, with the steam replaced by the powerful material aether. The Gatewatch go to Chandra Nalaar's home world, the titular plane of Kaladesh, where she finds her mother (presumed dead) and almost kills Tezzeret. Tezzeret later kidnaps Rashmi, winner of the famous Inventor's Fair, and begins a dastardly plot to control the ruling Consulate. With the Consulate imprisoning inventors and confiscating their devices following the Fair, tensions between the populace and the government reach a boiling point, as depicted in ''Aether Revolt''. The trading card game ''Magic: The Gathering'' has released a large number of sets since it was first published by Wizards of the Coast. Amonkhet
''Amonkhet'' is a ''Magic: The Gathering'' expansion block consisting of the sets ''Amonkhet'' and ''Hour of Devastation''. ''Amonkhet'' was released on April 28, 2017, and ''Hour of Devastation'' was released on July 14, 2017. The eponymous new plane has an ancient Egyptian theme, and features concepts like Mummy, mummies and embalming. Plot The block's setting is inspired by ancient Egypt, with themes of social hierarchy and contrast between life and death. In ''Amonkhet'', Gatewatch set out to destroy the evil dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas after learning of his dominion over the titular desert plane Amonkhet. In the desert, they find a city (Naktamun) teeming with food, water, and life, ruled by five gods, with Bolas seemingly absent altogether. The people of Naktamun train their entire lives to die in ritual combat, hoping to experience pure bliss in the afterlife when the God-Pharaoh (Bolas) returns to Amonkhet. James Wyatt () is a game designer and a former United Methodist minister. Mark Rosewater
Mark Rosewater (born May 25, 1967) is the head designer for '' Magic: The Gathering'', a position he has held since 2003. Biography Rosewater grew up in Pepper Pike, Ohio. In his youth, he worked as a professional magician. Rosewater has described his young self as a "social outcast" whose intelligence and small size led to bullying, and he never naturally lost his baby teeth, which had to be surgically removed. Despite these difficulties, he became a successful high school student at Orange High School with numerous scholarship offers. He attended Boston University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication. Career Television After graduating, Rosewater started his career in television as a runner. ''War of the Spark'' is the 81st ''Magic: The Gathering'' expansion; while it is not part of a block, this set is functionally the third part of a Ravnica focused storyline set on the plane of Ravnica. It was released on May 3, 2019. It also became available in ''MTG Arena'' on April 25, 2019. ''Magic: The Gathering Arena'' or MTG Arena is a free-to-play digital collectible card game developed and published by Wizards of the Coast (WotC). The game is a digital adaption based on the ''Magic: The Gathering'' (MTG) card game, allowing players to gain cards through booster packs, in-game achievements or microtransaction purchases, and build their own decks to challenge other players. The game was released in a beta state in November 2017, and was fully released for Microsoft Windows users in September 2019, and a macOS version on June 25, 2020. Grimdark
Grimdark is a subgenre of speculative fiction with a tone, style, or setting that is particularly dystopian, amoral, and violent. The term is inspired by the tagline of the tabletop strategy game ''Warhammer 40,000'': "In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war." The Origins Awards are American awards for outstanding work in the game industry. They are presented by the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design at the Origins Game Fair on an annual basis for the previous year, so (for example) the 1979 awards were given at the 1980 Origins. The Origins Award is commonly referred to as a Calliope, as the statuette is in the likeness of the muse of the same name. Academy members frequently shorten this name to "Callie". History Originally, the '' Charles S. Roberts Awards'' and the Origins Awards were one and the same. Starting with the 1987 awards, the Charles S.
