Jānis Paipals (born 28 September 1983 in Gulbene) is a Latvian cross-country skier who has competed internationally since 2006. He represented Latvia at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he finished 62nd in the individual sprint, 72nd in the 15 km event, and was lapped during the 15 km + 15 km double pursuit. At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec, he placed 67th in the individual sprint and did not finish the 15 km + 15 km double pursuit event. Gulbene
Gulbene (; ) is a town in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. It is an administrative center of Gulbene Municipality. History Historical documents first mention the 1224 land division act between the Livonian Order, Order of the Sword Brothers and the Archbishopric of Riga, Archbishop of Riga. In the 14th century, the Archbishop built a stone castle around which a populated place was formed. The Low church, Evangelical Lutheran church (Brivības iela 13) was built on the ancient Latgalians, Latgalian castle mound in place of the later Middle Age brick castle from 1838.–1843. The church is built in the Classical architecture, classical style. Vecgulbene (Old Gulbene) estate complex was built in the middle and second half of the 19th century not far off the church. The most significant buildings are the White Palace (Brivības iela 12), the Red Palace (Parka iela 1) and the magazine granary (Brivības iela 9). FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 () took place 18 February – 1 March 2009 in Liberec, Czech Republic. This was the fourth time these championships were hosted either in the Czech Republic or in Czechoslovakia, having done so at Janské Lázně (1925) and Vysoké Tatry (in both 1935 and 1970). The biggest sports event in the country's history, it hosted 589 athletes from 61 countries. Women's ski jumping and Men's Nordic combined 10 km mass start events debuted at these championships, both won by Americans Lindsey Van and Todd Lodwick, respectively. Norway won the most medals with twelve and most golds with five, all in the men's cross-country skiing events, including three from Petter Northug. Liberec (; ) is a city in the Czech Republic. It has about 108,000 inhabitants, making it the fifth largest city in the country.
