Johnny Allen (September 20, 1917 – January 29, 2014) was an American jazz and R&B musician who worked for both Motown and Stax Records and received a Grammy Award with Isaac Hayes for his arrangement of " Theme from Shaft". Early life He was born in Uchee, Alabama, and grew up in Chicago before moving to Detroit in 1936. A self-taught pianist, his main influence was Earl Hines. John Thomas Allen (September 30, 1904 – March 29, 1959) was an American pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB), who played for the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns, Brooklyn Dodgers, and New York Giants. Early life Born in Lenoir, North Carolina, Allen spent part of his youth in the Baptist orphanage in Thomasville, North Carolina, and he attended Thomasville High School. Baseball career Allen reached the Yankees in an unusual way. While working as a bellhop in a hotel, he was told to take some fans to the room of Yankee scout Paul Krichell. Allen told Krichell that he was a pitcher, and the scout arranged a tryout. Allen was an immediate success for the Yankees, debuting in with a 17–4 record and a 3.70 earned run average (ERA) for the world champions. Curtis Sheppard (born about 1919) was an American boxer. Life Sheppard was from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sheppard was a popular fighter during the 1930s and 1940s. His nickname was "The Hatchetman." As was common during his era, no records of his birthdate, or his death date (if he is dead), are kept. Boxing career Sheppard never received a world title shot. He was what in boxing is described as a "journeyman." However, his career had many ups and downs, which made him an interesting boxer for fans to watch. The February 2005 issue of Ring magazine, described him as a "gatekeeper," a fighter who stood in the way of other boxers seeking a title shot. Sheppard began his career as a professional boxer on September 24, 1938, knocking out Larry White in the first round at Madison Square Garden. Johnny Allen is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera '' EastEnders'', played by Billy Murray. He first appeared on 4 January 2005 and became the show's primary antagonist until the character was axed and killed off on 20 October 2006.
