Curtis Sheppard
Curtis Sheppard (born about 1919) was an American boxer. Life Sheppard was from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sheppard was a popular fighter during the 1930s and 1940s. His nickname was "The Hatchetman." As was common during his era, no records of his birthdate, or his death date (if he is dead), are kept. Boxing career Sheppard never received a world title shot. He was what in boxing is described as a "journeyman." However, his career had many ups and downs, which made him an interesting boxer for fans to watch. The February 2005 issue of Ring Magazine, Ring magazine, described him as a "gatekeeper," a fighter who stood in the way of other boxers seeking a title shot. Sheppard began his career as a professional boxer on September 24, 1938, knockout, knocking out Larry White in the first round at Madison Square Garden. Alf Brown (6 February 1914 – 28 July 2002) was a leading Australian rules football writer covering the Victorian Football League (which later became the Australian Football League) from 1945 to 1979. Brown was the chief football writer for ''The Herald'' newspaper in Melbourne during the period 1945 to 1979. He covered an estimated 1,000 matches, including 34 grand finals. He was noted for the very detailed match previews he wrote as a result of his ability to win the confidence and trust of club coaches. Melio Bettina (November 18, 1916 – December 20, 1996) was an American boxer who was the Light Heavyweight World Champion. Amateur career Bettina won the 1934 Intercity Golden Gloves at light-heavyweight (2nd Div.) by decision over Tony Zale. Pro career According to local legend Melio changed to a southpaw stance after he couldn't find any amateur challengers. Bettina was recognized as World Light Heavyweight champion by the New York State Athletic Commission in 1939.
