Joaquim Santana Silva Guimarães
Joaquim Santana Silva Guimarães (22 March 1936 – 24 April 1989), known as Santana, was a Portuguese footballer who played as a right half. A Portugal international, he played his entire career with Benfica. Club career Santana was born in Lobito, Benguela Province, Portuguese Angola. After starting playing football in Angola for Sport Clube da Catumbela, he joined Portuguese first division club S.L. Benfica at the age of 18, being promoted to the first team two years later. With Benfica, Santana appeared in 162 official games and scored 79 goals, winning six national championships and three Portuguese Cups. In the 1960–61 edition of the European Cup he played an essential role as the club won the competition, netting four goals in nine matches, including one in the final against FC Barcelona (3–2); he lost his importance in the following seasons (which included two more European Cup finals), after the arrival of another player from the colonies, Eusébio. Lobito
Lobito is a municipality in Angola. It is located in Benguela Province, on the Atlantic Coast north of the Catumbela Estuary. The Lobito municipality had a population of 393,079 in 2014. History The city was founded in 1843 and owes its existence to the bay of the same name having been chosen as the sea terminus of the Benguela railway to the far interior, passing through Luau to Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. Intercontinental Cup (1960–2004)
The Intercontinental Cup, officially the European/South American Cup and known from 1980 as the Toyota Cup for sponsorship reasons, was an international association football, football competition endorsed by UEFA (Europe) and CONMEBOL (South America), contested between representative clubs from these confederations, usually the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the South American Copa Libertadores. It ran from 1960 to 2004, when it was succeeded by the FIFA Club World Cup, although they both ran concurrently in 2000. 1961–62 European Cup
The 1961–62 European Cup was the seventh season of the European Cup, UEFA's premier club football tournament. The competition was won by Benfica for the second time in a row, beating Real Madrid 5–3 in the final at the Olympisch Stadion, Amsterdam, on 2 May 1962. This outcome meant that Real Madrid became the first team to win and lose European Cup final. Ferenc Puskás scored his second hat-trick in the final of the competition, and as of 2024, is the only player to achieve this feat, as well as being the only final hat-trick scorer to end up on the losing side. Taça de Honra (Honour Cup) is a Portuguese friendly football tournament played between teams of the Lisbon Football Association (AFL). It is the third oldest competition in Portugal after the championships of Lisbon and Porto. The format has varied, and before the 1959–60 season, the trophy was mostly given to the winner of the Lisbon championship. Afterwards, it was played as a four-team elimination tournament during pre-season, between the best-placed Lisbon teams in championships disputed in the previous season. After 20 years of inactivity, the competition returned for two years: 2014 and 2015. 1964 European Nations' Cup
The 1964 European Nations' Cup was the second edition of the UEFA European Championship. The final tournament was held in Spain. It was won by the hosts 2–1 over the defending champions, the Soviet Union. The tournament was a knockout competition; 29 teams entered (Greece withdrew after the draw after refusing to play Albania). The Soviet Union, Austria and Luxembourg received byes to the round of 16. The teams played home-and-away matches until the semi-finals; the final four teams would move on to the final tournament, whose host was selected after the teams became known.
