Jesús Blancornelas
J. Jesús Blancornelas (November 14, 1936 – November 23, 2006) was a Mexican journalist who co-founded the Tijuana-based ''Zeta'' magazine, known for its reporting on corruption and drug trafficking. His work encompassed extensive research on how the drug industry influences local leaders and the police in the Mexican state of Baja California – topics frequently avoided by the rest of the Mexican media. As the author of six books, Blancornelas was regarded by the press as a leading expert on organized crime and drug trafficking during his time. He was also the first man to publish a photograph of Ramón Arellano Félix, the former drug lord of the Tijuana Cartel. San Luis Potosí
San Luis Potosí, officially the Free and Sovereign State of San Luis Potosí, is one of the 32 states which compose the Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided in 59 municipalities and is named after its capital city, San Luis Potosí. José Guillermo Abel López Portillo y Pacheco (; 16 June 1920 – 17 February 2004) was a Mexican writer, lawyer, and politician affiliated with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) who served as the 58th president of Mexico from 1976 to 1982. The Special Forces Corps () are the special forces battalions of the Mexican Army. El Norte is a daily newspaper printed and distributed in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. History During the decades of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, El Norte gained important successes in exposing corruption in government. Due to its principles of independent journalism, the federal government cut the paper supply required to print the newspaper, so the company had to import it directly. The Juárez Cartel (, ), also known as the Vicente Carrillo Fuentes Organization, is a Mexican drug cartel based in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, across the Mexico—U.S. border from El Paso, Texas. The cartel is one of several drug trafficking organizations that have been known to decapitate their rivals, mutilate their corpses and dump them in public places to instill fear not only in the general public but also in local law enforcement and their rivals, the Sinaloa Cartel. Francisco Javier Ortiz Franco (1954 in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato – June 22, 2004 in Tijuana, Baja California) was a Mexican journalist, who was murdered after writing about drug trafficking. Biography Prior to his work as a journalist, Ortiz trained as a lawyer. In 1980, he joined Jesús Blancornelas and Héctor Félix Miranda in founding ''Zeta'', a weekly magazine known for its coverage of organized crime, drug trafficking, and government corruption. Ortiz served as an editor and also wrote a column for the magazine on legal issues. In 2004, Ortiz began to write about drug trafficking.
