Christian Hee Hwass
Christian Hee Hwass (1731–1803) was a Danish malacologist who is remembered for his work in conchology. Although he was born in Denmark, Hwass did most of his important work in France. He moved to Paris in 1780 and later to Auteuil in 1794. In France, he collaborated with famous scientists Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744–1829) and Heinrich Christian Friedrich Schumacher (1757–1830), a fellow Dane on a research trip in Paris during the 1780s. Hwass is remembered for amassing a large shell collection that included numerous rare specimens. Many European scientists used the collection as a reference work for their personal publications. Hwass's best-known written work was the 1792 publication of '' Encyclopedie Methodique''. Although his friend, Jean Guillaume Bruguière (1750–1798), is often credited as author of the encyclopedia, the majority of the work was done by Hwass. References External links * Dodge H. (1946). Orthoceras
''Orthoceras'', from Ancient Greek ὀρθός (''orthós''), meaning "straight", and κέρας (''kéras''), meaning "horn", is a genus of extinct nautiloid cephalopod restricted to Middle Ordovician-aged marine limestones of the Baltic States and Sweden. This genus is sometimes called ''Orthoceratites''. Note it is sometimes misspelled as ''Orthocera'', ''Orthocerus'' or ''Orthoceros''. ''Orthoceras'' was formerly thought to have had a worldwide distribution due to the genus' use as a wastebasket taxon for numerous species of conical-shelled nautiloids throughout the Paleozoic and Triassic. Since this work was carried out and re-cataloging of the genus, ''Orthoceras'' '' sensu stricto'' refers to ''Orthoceras regulare'', of Ordovician-aged Baltic Sea limestones of Sweden and neighboring areas. These are slender, elongate shells with the middle of the body chamber transversely constricted, and a subcentral orthochoanitic siphuncle. The surface is ornamented by a network ...

Lingula (brachiopod)
''Lingula'' is a genus of brachiopods within the class Lingulata. ''Lingula'' or forms very close in appearance have existed possibly since the Cambrian. Like its relatives, it has two unadorned organo-phosphatic valves and a long fleshy stalk. ''Lingula'' lives in burrows in barren sandy coastal seafloor and feeds by filtering detritus from the water. It can be detected by a short row of three openings through which it takes in water (sides) and expels it again (middle). Anatomy and morphology Shell A shell encloses the organs and other internal parts of the body, except for a long, fleshy stalk (or pedicle) that extends from the tail (or posterior) end of the shell. This shell has two nearly identical tan or bronze valves, that are often tinged greenish or bluegreenish. These are held together by muscles between them. The valves are secreted by two mantle folds, one on the dorsal and one on the ventral side of the body. The valves are composed of chitin, protein, and calci ...
