Israel–Hamas War Hostage Crisis
In 2023, as part of the October 7th attacks which initiated the Gaza war, Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups abducted 251 people from Israel to the Gaza Strip, including children, women, and elderly people. Almost half of the hostages were foreign nationals or have multiple citizenships, and some hostages were Negev Bedouins. The captives are likely being held in different locations in the Gaza Strip. Ron Dermer
Ronald Dermer (; born April 16, 1971) is an Israeli politician and diplomat serving as the Minister of Strategic Affairs since 2022 and as head of the negotiations for hostages release since February 2025. He served as the Israeli Ambassador to the United States from 2013 to 2021. Early life Dermer was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida to Jay Dermer, a lawyer from New York who was Mayor of Miami Beach from 1967 to 1971 after defeating Elliott Roosevelt and Yaffa, née Rosenthal, born in Mandate Palestine. Her parents, Joseph and Rivka, had fled growing antisemitism in Poland and Germany in the 1930s. A few years after the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the family emigrated to Florida. Negev Bedouin
The Negev Bedouin (, ''Badwu an-Naqab''; , ''HaBedu'im BaNegev'') are traditionally pastoral nomadic Arab tribes (Bedouin), while some are of sub-Saharan African descent, who until the later part of the 19th century would wander between Hijaz in the east and the Sinai Peninsula in the west. On October 7, 2023, Hamas and several other Palestinian militant groups launched coordinated armed incursions from the Gaza Strip into the Gaza envelope of southern Israel, the first invasion of Israeli territory since the 1948 Arab–Israeli War.
